Manish Malhotra is an Indian fashion designer.[2][3] Manish Malhotra’s prolific career spanning 27 years has seen him redefine fashion for an entire generation of Indians. From his work with Hindi cinema’s influential leading-ladies to launching his eponymous label in 2005, Manish Malhotra tells design stories in a language profuse with elegance, ultra-femininity and unapologetic glamour. 2015 was a milestone year for Manish Malhotra as it marked 25 years of his association with Hindi cinema as a designer and stylist and 10 years since the creation of the eponymous label.

In 2013, Manish Malhotra was the first designer to have opened the largest, Indian single-brand couture store sprawled over 9,000 sq.ft in Delhi.[4] The following year, the label marked a turnover of over INR 1 Billion making it one of the first Indian luxury fashion houses to achieve this milestone.[5]

Manish Malhotra started his career as a model, while studying at the Elphinstone College[6] in Mumbai. Though he did not have formal fashion design training, Manish’s love for sketching, passion for cinema and penchant for clothes, saw him veer towards costume styling.

Film career

He revolutionised costume designing and introduced the concept of styling in Bollywood after his first film as a designer for Juhi Chawla starrer ‘Swarg’.[7] Manish’s creative process began with script-readings – an unheard-of practice in Hindi films, so as to make the characters more relatable to the audience. A firm believer that costume was an integral part of visual story-telling, Manish clearly marked his foothold in the fashion industry by winning the first Filmfare Costume Award ever conferred for the film ‘Rangeela’. Ever since then, Manish has brought his inimitable aesthetic to costume design and styling for the country’s leading actors and style icons.

Manish Malhotra Label

In 1998, Manish decided to venture into mainstream designing with his high-profile couture store 'Reverie - Manish Malhotra'.[8] This move further consolidated Manish’s stature as one of the leading design voices in the country and saw his clientele move beyond the film industry to include discerning fashion-mavens across India and the Indian diaspora.

Soon after, Manish received immense appreciation for his glamorous ensembles using traditional colours, craftsmanship, textures and embroideries and presented at his first runway show in November 1999.[9]

In 2005, he launched his couture label MANISH MALHOTRA.[10] Today, Label MANISH MALHOTRA offers Bridal, Couture and Diffusion collections and currently retails at two stores in Mumbai and the Haveli store overlooking the magnificent Qutub Minar in New Delhi.[11] The label also retails at multi-brand boutiques across India and in Dubai, with plans to open flagship stores in London and Dubai.[12] The label also offers an extensive selection of impeccably cut and tailored ensembles for men and plans to soon unveil a section dedicated to menswear at the Delhi Haveli store.

Over the years, the label’s aesthetic has evolved to bring together traditional Indian fabrics and techniques with contemporary silhouettes. However, be it gowns with intricate gold embroidery, cigarette pants paired with sherwani jackets for women, voluminous lehengas worn with cropped blouses or the use of non-traditional colours like royal blue, soft pink, maroon etc. in bridal ensembles, the label’s design language continues to be unapologetically glamorous.

The design-story of the recent collections has been inspired by Manish’s consummate passion for reviving Indian craftsmanship. Manish has taken up the responsible initiative to promote regional handicrafts and workmanship from rural India. One such initiative is his association with the ‘Mijwan Welfare Society’– an NGO founded by Late Kaifi Azmi and headed by Shabana Azmi and Namrata Goyal.[13] His association goes back to 2010 when ‘Mijwan Sonnets in Fabric’ was unveiled for the first time. In 2015, he presented ‘Mijwan - The Legacy, a fashion show with senior and young members of Bollywood walking the ramp in his creations. Manish Malhotra has adopted the Kaifi Azmi Sewing and Embroidery Centre in Mijwan to help generate employment opportunities for women there. ‘Chikankari by Mijwan Welfare Society’ is a dream project that Manish has nurtured, giving a platform to the Mijwan women to showcase their work that today stands up to the highest standards of craftsmanship. A craft that has been around for years is being brought into the limelight by giving it a characteristic "newness", reflecting Manish's signature contemporary design aesthetic.

Some of the label’s recent collections also saw the use of handloom textiles from Varanasi, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh as well as refreshing centuries-old crafts techniques for the modern consumer. In March 2017, the Philadelphia Museum of Art featured outfits from the Manish Malhotra 2013 couture collection – Thread of Emotion, in an ongoing retrospective spotlighting the Phulkari technique at their Joan Spain Gallery.[14]

Clients & Projects

Manish Malhotra has dressed the most glamorous leading women in Hindi cinema such as Kajol, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, Kangana Ranaut, Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and many others.[15] [16][17]He has presented his collections not only at Fashion Weeks in India but also at showcases across the globe.[18] Incidentally, the label enjoys the distinction of having had the most runway showcases in the Indian fashion industry.

One of Manish’s first international assignments was to design a custom-made traditional outfit for Michael Jackson, during the King of Pop’s visit to India in the late 1990’s.[19] He has also styled Jean-Claude Van Damme, Reese Witherspoon in Mira Nair’s Vanity Fair, Kylie Minogue and Jermaine Jackson and wife Halima.[20] He has also designed the wedding outfits for the Princess of Riyadh.[21]

In August 2016, Manish’s show for Lakme Fashion Week’s Winter-Festive edition was shot for a Virtual Reality fashion experience by Etihad Airways – a first for an Indian brand.[22] The Virtual Reality video was released earlier in January 2017 at Etihad’s state-of-the-art Innovation Centre in Abu Dhabi.[23]

Known for his astute work-ethic, Manish also collaborated with Google to launch the ‘G Suite’ – a set of intelligent apps designed for modern professionals.[24]
