Mandy Wong (born 21 December 1982) is a Hong Kong television actress.
Wong began her television and acting career with her participation in the Miss Hong Kong 2007 beauty pageant, where she was placed among the top 5 finalists.[1] She joined TVB that same year and was part of TVB's graduating acting class of 2008. Wong debuted with a brief appearance in TVB's 2007 sitcom Best Selling Secrets. She later gained recognition as Cheng Siu-man in the 2010 romantic drama Suspects in Love, and has achieved wider fame for her performance in 2012 drama L'Escargot.
Early life
Born in Hong Kong, Wong was raised in a single-parent household. She has one older sister Cathy, who is an English teacher at King's Glory Education Centre. Her mother is the owner of a cosmetics shop in Wan Chai.[2]
Career
Following her graduation from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Wong worked as a flight attendant for three years before participating in the Miss Hong Kong 2007 beauty pageant, in which she was placed among the top 5 finalists. She signed an artiste contract with TVB and her television debut came that same year with an uncredited appearance in the sitcom Best Selling Secrets. She graduated out of TVB's acting class in 2008.
After two years of appearing in dramas as small supporting roles, Wong gained broader public attention with her supporting role in the 2009 comedy-drama, A Chip Off the Old Block. She played So Fung-lin, the bespectacled younger sister of Myolie Wu's character, So Fung-nei. Her performance was positively received by both critics and netizens.[1] Impressed with her character portrayal, producer Poon Ka Tak cast Wong to portray Flora Chan's timid younger sister in the 2010 romantic comedy drama Suspects in Love. To prepare for her role, Wong studied Maggie Cheung's performance in Police Cadet '84.[1]
In 2012, she was cast in her first second female leading role in medical-drama The Hippocratic Crush as Tavia Yeung's younger sister. Her popularity rose and was highly praised by netizens for her character Lau Siu-Lan in L'Escargot as Oscar Leung's ferrocious wife. In the same year, she won the Most Improved Female Artiste in Malaysia's My AOD Favourite Awards and TVB Anniversary Awards. She also placed Top 2 in TVB Anniversary Awards for Best Supporting Actress. The following year, she won the Most Improved Female Artiste in Singapore's Starhub TVB Awards. She is the first person to have won in all three countries.
She continued playing second female lead roles in 2013's drama Always and Ever starring as Esther Kwan's younger sister. Her villainous role was yet again highly praised by the netizens and producer. Through the sequel The Hippocratic Crush II, she has gained her first character nomination for TVB Anniversary Awards and has won one of the Top 15 Characters in Malaysia's TVB Star Awards Malaysia
In 2015, she played her first female leading role in the drama The Fixer, gaining good reviews from the netizens. She also starred in her first ancient drama Captain of Destiny as a prostitute, pairing up Joel Chan. Following her first female leading role, Wong was cast in the family drama Daddy Dearest as female leading role again, alongside Jonhnson Lee and Jason Chan. In December, Wong was cast in the legal drama Law dis-order opposite the veterans Alex Fong and Liu Kai Chi.
In April 2016, Mandy was cast as the first female lead in Three Women and One Gene, playing a character with dissociative identity disorder, with three different personalities. In August 2016, Mandy was once again cast as the first female lead in Conquering the Demon, playing an A&E doctor collaborating with Kenneth Ma.
