Swami Vivekananda Airport (IATA: RPR, ICAO: VERP), formerly known as Raipur Airport, is the primary airport serving the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The airport is located at Mana between Raipur (15 km (9.3 mi)) and Naya Raipur 10 km (6.2 mi).[4] It is the 28th busiest airport in India by passenger traffic and 31st busiest by aircraft movement.
On 24 January 2012, the airport was renamed after Swami Vivekananda, as a tribute to the popular saint who spent two of his teenage year in Raipur.[5]
Airfield
Swami Vivekananda Airport has a single runway—Runway 06/24—measuring 3,251 m (10,666 ft) in length and 45 m (148 ft) in width.
The airfield is equipped with night landing facilities such as CAT-1 Instrument Landing System (ILS) at Runway 24, and navigational aids such as DVOR, DME, NDB, and PAPI.
The apron has five parking bays that can accommodate A320/B737 category of aircraft and a helipad. The airport is equipped with category VI firefighting and rescue capability with provisions for category VII on demand.[6]
Terminals
New integrated terminal
The new integrated terminal was inaugurated on 7 November 2012 by President of India Pranab Mukherjee. Built at a cost of approx. ₹135 crore (US$21 million), the building covers an area of 18,500 m2 (4.6 acres). It is designed to handle 700 passengers at a time, including 200 international passengers.[7]
The new terminal has 2 aero-bridges, 8 boarding gates, 15 check-in counters, 5 X-ray baggage machines, 2 security counters, and 2 conveyor belts for luggage.[6][8]
Cargo terminal
The Common User Domestic Cargo Terminal (CUDCT) was inaugurated on 4 June 2016, fulfilling the long pending demand of the state to start air cargo operations. The AAI has converted the old terminal building into CUDCT to handle cargo operations. Ahmedabad based GSEC Limited has bagged the contract to operate and maintain the CUDCT for an initial period of five years.[9]

Connectivity
The airport is located at a distance of 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) from Raipur Junction railway station and 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) from Pandri bus terminal. It is well connected by Raipur and Naya Raipur BRTS and cabs. In addition, the Raipur Urban Public Transport Society operates direct air-conditioned city buses to the neighbouring cities of Bhilai and Durg, via Raipur.[11]
Awards and recognition
- Ranked Number 1 in overall customer satisfaction (July-Dec 2014) in Non-Metro Category. With a score of 4.75 on a scale of 5.00, the airport topped the list of 10 best non-metro airports in the country operated by Airports Authority of India (AAI).[12][13]
- 'Best Airport of the Country in Non-Metro Category' for the year 2013 by the Union Tourism Ministry.[14][15]
Accidents and incidents
- 7 August 2015: United Airways (Bangladesh) flight UBD 585 (a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 bearing tail number S2 - AEI), flying from Dhaka to Muscat with 173 passengers on board, made an emergency landing at the airport after an engine failure. All passengers and crew were reported safe upon landing.[16]
- 8 May 2015: IndiGo flight 6E 245 from Kolkata, taxiing clear off the runway after landing, averted a major mishap when Jet Airways flight 9W 377 from Mumbai too landed on the same runway. Among the passengers on board the IndiGo flight were members of the Indian Premier League team Delhi Daredevils, including Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan.[17]
- 15 June 2012: A Border Security Force (BSF) operated HAL Dhruv, registered VT - BSN, lost altitude during a test flight at the airport dropping from a height of 100 ft. Three occupants were injured including one of the pilots sustaining serious injuries. The chopper had incurred substantial damage in the accident.[18]
