ADAMA Agricultural Solutions Ltd. is a global crop protection company. The company develops, produces, and markets products and services that help farmers increase their yields by controlling weeds, insects, and disease. Adama employs 5,000 people worldwide, and markets its products in over 100 countries.[1] The Adama Group has R&D and manufacturing facilities across the world, with two main operational hubs in Israel and China.
Founded in 1945, Adama is one of the largest companies in the global crop protection industry. The company emerged from two Israeli companies, Agan and Makhteshim, founded in 1945 and 1952 respectively, which merged in 1997 to create Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd. In 2011 the company was acquired by ChemChina.[2] In 2014 the company the company launched its new global brand and became known as ADAMA Agricultural Solutions Ltd.[3]
Adama aims to become a leading player in the Chinese market, the world's third largest agrochemical market.[4][5] Accordingly, the company is currently establishing its commercial platform in China, as well as launching manufacturing and R&D facilities in the city of Huai’an. To further advance its China strategy, Adama has announced that it will combine with Sanonda, a Chinese agrochemical company, and become a public company traded on the Shenzhen stock exchange.[6]
Today, Adama's shares are owned by ChemChina (China National Chemical Corporation). In 2016, Adama reported sales of $3.1 billion. The company's bonds are publicly traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.
History
In 1945, Zvi Zur and Michael Pikarski established the Agan Cooperative for the development of chemical products in Moza, near Jerusalem. They were later joined by Israel Tamir and Eliyahu Teomim. Zur left Agan and relocated to the Negev where, in 1952, Makhteshim Chemical Works, was established.
In 1973, Agan and Makhteshim partnered to distribute their products worldwide. In 1997, the two companies merged to form Makhteshim Agan Industries Ltd..
In January 2014, Makhteshim Agan re-branded its global business As ADAMA, the name coming from the Hebrew word for "earth" or "soil".[7][8] In October 2011, China National Agrochemical Corporation, a subsidiary of China National Chemical Corporation (ChemChina), acquired a 60% stake in Adama, delisting the company from the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.[9] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the deal as "a big achievement for the economy of Israel."[10] In 2016, ChemChina acquired the remaining 40% stake in Adama and is currently its sole shareholder.
Global presence
Adama sells its products in over 100 markets worldwide, with presence in all the largest agricultural markets, among them Brazil, the US, China, Australia, India, Germany, and France, as well as additional high-growth markets.
Products
Adama develops, produces and markets crop protection products – herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, plant growth regulators and seed treatments. These products aim to improve the quality and quantity of crop yields by providing protection from weeds, insects and disease. The company's portfolio comprises over 270 active ingredients and over 1,000 end-use products.
The company also develops and markets consumer and professional solutions – agrochemical products applied for non-agricultural needs such as railway maintenance, veterinary care, home gardening and protection of water reservoirs. In addition, Adama produces non-agrochemical products, such as nutritional supplements and natural lycopene (through its subsidiary Lycored), aromatic products (through its subsidiary Aroma), and industrial products such as hydrogen peroxide.
Adama's portfolio is largely based on off-patent products. However, a key part of its current strategy involves a shift towards more innovative and value-added solutions, such as advanced mixtures and formulations, and innovative products.
Nimitz
NIMITZ®, launched in 2014, is a novel broad spectrum systemic nematicide. It controls plant-parasitic nematodes, one of the most destructive and problematic pests for growers around the world, responsible for an estimated $125 billion of annual plant losses worldwide.
NIMITZ® requires lower application rates compared to existing solutions, reducing the chemical load and improving sustainability. Accordingly, it does not require special application equipment or plastic film, allowing farmers to return to their fields shortly after application.
Brevis
BREVIS®, launched in 2015, is a novel thinning agent for use on apple and pear trees. BREVIS® aims to increase yields of high-quality, marketable fruit, while reducing manual thinning costs. BREVIS® is a photosynthesis inhibitor which differs from hormonal thinning agents as it temporarily inhibits photosynthesis without interfering with the plant’s hormone regulation.
Rebranding and New Name
The 2014 rebranding of the company from Makhteshim Agan Industries to Adama Agricultural Solutions included the transformation of more than 40 global company brands into one single, and unified brand, ADAMA.[11] The name Adama means “ground” in Hebrew, the essential element of farming, and represents the company’s commitment to advancing agriculture around the world. As part of the rebranding process Adama restructured its product line and introduced its promise Simply.Grow.Together.
R&D and Manufacturing
Adama has five R&D centers worldwide with its main R&D facilities in Israel and China. The company also has a broad network of local and global registration capabilities.
Adama has several manufacturing facilities worldwide, with key facilities located in Israel, and packing and formulation facilities in additional countries, including Brazil and India. The company is also currently constructing its new operational hub in Huia’an, China, which will include a multipurpose synthesis plant and a global formulation and packaging center.
Environmental Record
In recent years Adama has invested over $370 million in environmental facilities, among them air and waste treatment facilities, and ecology and safety programs.
In 2015, Adama connected its two main facilities in Israel, Adama Agan and Adama Makhteshim, to power stations running on natural gas. As a result, since 2015, 78% of the energy consumed by these facilities has come from clean energy sources, such as natural gas.
Community Involvement
As part of Adama’s extensive Corporate Social Responsibility effort it invests in educational programs with a focus on the sciences, especially chemistry, agriculture and sustainability. This education mission is twofold: to cultivate the next generation of scientists and to support, strengthen and invest in the communities in which Adama operates.
Adama publishes a bi-annual Corporate Social Responsibility report outlining its activities in full.[12]
Among the education programs initiated and funded by the company are:
Sowing the Seeds of Science: An educational program engaging students to develop a passion for agriculture and is a cornerstone of Adama’s community involvement mission. The company has established state-of-the-art greenhouses and smart classrooms on educational farms in Israel, where students have the opportunity to participate in classes and experiments on the farm.
The Marie Curie and Archimedes Programs: Allows high school students to begin their studies towards a Bachelor of Science degree earning enough credit to complete the first year of the degree, while still in high school.
The Adama Institute in Londrina, south Brazil, provides children with diverse learning programs including music, dance, drama and an approach to good citizenship.

In 2014, Adama was recognized for its new global brand launch with the Agrow Award for Best Marketing Campaign.[13]
