Makenke is a neighborhood within Mbarara City.
Location
Makenke is located approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) North East of Mbarara Central Business District, on Masaka-Kampala highway. It borders with Kakoba in the south west, Nyamityobora in the west, Koranorya in the east and Kacence in the North.
Overview
Makenke is a low income settlement around Mbarara town, the settlement is found in Kakiika division, Mbarara Municipality but has been part of Kashari County until July 2014 when it was incorporated to the Mbarara Municipality. It hosts the Coca Cola manufacturing plant, the subsidiary of The Coca Cola Company, It also hosts an industry reserve which is administered by the Uganda Investment Authority, 2nd Division Barracks of Uganda People's Defense Force A branch of Wazalendo Savings and Credit Union the largest Microfinance cooperative in Uganda which belong to Ugandan Army. It also has Mbarara Army school. The Mbarara Northern bypass road also starts from Makenke as it branches northwards to Rwebishuri. The proposed Mbarara Southern Bypass road will also start from Makenke at a round about which is currently being constructed (March, 2015) then head southwest through the Barracks, to Kakoba Via Kyapotane through Katete and join the Mbarara Isingiro road.
