McKillop (surname)

McKillop and MacKillop, Mackillop are English language surnames derived from the Gaelic-language. The names are derived from the Gaelic MacFhilib, meaning "son of Filib". Filib is a Gaelic form of Philip. The surnames can be represented in Scottish Gaelic as MacFhilib and MacPhilip.

There were families of MacKillops in Isle of Arran; there were also families in Argyll who were a sept of the MacDonalds of Glencoe; others in Inverness-shire were a sept of the McDonnells of Keppoch. MacKillops were also standard-bearers to the Campbells of Dunstaffnage, in Argyll.^[1] The MacKillops of Berneray, North Uist are known in Scottish Gaelic as MacPhàic; they were associated with the MacLeods.

The McKillops migrated to north Glens of Antrim during the Ulster Plantation in the early 17th century. The surname is numerous around Loughguile, Cushendall and Ballycastle, County Antrim.^{[2][3] [4]}
