Ma'ruf Amin is an Indonesian Islamic scholar, the current and seventh leader of the Indonesian Ulema Council as well as the current and tenth chairman of the advisory council of Nahdlatul Ulama, the world's largest Islamic organization.[1]

Amin was embroiled in part of the controversy surrounding the contentious Jakarta gubernatorial election, 2017. Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, the target of the November 2016 Jakarta protests, alleged that Amin had taken sides in the election due to a phone call with former President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, whose son Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono was running against Purnama in the election.[2][3][4] Purnama later apologized to Amin via social media for any implication that Amin had been influenced by political pressure.[5][6] Amin accepted Purnama's apology, stating that the matter was resolved.[7] Despite Amin's forgiveness, an organization known as Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs reported Purnama to the criminal investigation unit of the Indonesian National Police for allegedly having harassed Amin and wiretapped his phone conversations with former President Yudhoyono,[8] despite previous denials by Purnama's legal team of the latter act.[9]
