Maître

Maître, often written in its abbreviated form Me or plural Mes (Belgian French, Canadian English and Québécois French), is a commonly used honorific for lawyers and notaries in France, Belgium and French-speaking parts of Canada.[1] . The Canadian Justice system is bi-juridical, in that the jurisdiction of Quebec is governed by the Civil Law and the rest of Canada by the Common law. The origin of the honorific Maître is from the Civil law tradition, and still widely used in France. As the database of the Office québécois de la langue française explains, it is used only as a title, but not for signing one's name.[2]
