MTV Music is a non-stop music entertainment channel operated by Viacom International Media Networks Europe. Available in the United Kingdom and Ireland on subscription satellite and digital television services.

Concept and expansion

MTV Networks Europe announced the introduction of a non-stop music channel in January 2011. As the main MTV brand has deviated from its original purpose and increased competition from other music channels and online services, MTV addressed this issue by launching a new music channel MTV Music. The channel launched on 1 February 2011 in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.[1] The channel replaced MTV Shows. On the date of MTV Shows' closure and MTV Music's launch, MTV moved up the Sky programme guide from its long-held berth at the head of the Music section to the Entertainment guide; in return the MTV Shows broadcast capacity moved down from the Entertainment section to take the place of MTV in the Music guide, becoming MTV Music.

MTV Music began broadcasting in widescreen on 28 March 2012.

On 15 October 2013 MTV Music launched an Irish feed.[2][3]

On 15 February 2016, MTV Music +1 launched on Sky channel 358, replacing the standard-definition MTV Live.

Expansion into Italy

The MTV Music channel launched in Italy on 1 March 2011,[4] replacing MTV Plus.

Expansion into Australia and New Zealand

On 3 December 2013 VIMN launched the channel in Australia replacing MTV Hits.[5]

On 1 December 2015, a localized version of MTV Music launched in New Zealand on Sky Television, replacing both MTV Hits & MTV Classic.[6]

Expansion into Poland

The MTV Music channel launched in Poland on October 2017,[7] replacing VIVA Poland after 17 years broadcasting this channel. MTV Music debuted in Poland as localized version.

Expansion into Hungary

The MTV Music channel launched in Hungary on 3 October 2017,[8] replacing VIVA Magyarország. MTV Music debuted in Hungary as international version.
