The Luzerne County Council is the governing body of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The council meets at the Luzerne County Courthouse in Wilkes-Barre. There are eleven members on the assembly. The Democrats control a majority of seats (with seven members). The council also consists of three Republicans and one Independent. The chairperson is the highest-ranking officer on the council. When the group is not in session, the officer's duties often include acting as its head, its representative to the outside world, and its spokesperson. The current chairperson is Linda McClosky Houck.[1][2][3]
History
On November 2, 2010, the voters of Luzerne County adopted a home rule charter by a margin of 49,343 to 40,394.[4] This move abolished the previous county board of commissioners. The following year (in 2011), the first general election for the new assembly was held. The first council members were sworn in on January 2, 2012. The first chairperson was Jim Bobeck.[5]
