"Lust for Life" is a song by American singer Lana Del Rey featuring Canadian singer The Weeknd. It was released on April 19, 2017, through Polydor Records and Interscope Records, as the second single from her fifth studio album of the same name (2017).[1][2] The song was written and produced by Del Rey and Rick Nowels, with additional writing from The Weeknd and Max Martin and additional production from Dean Reid and Kieron Menzies.[3] It is her first released song to feature another artist.
Background and release
In an interview with Courtney Love for Dazed magazine, Del Rey revealed that "Lust for Life" was the first song she wrote for the album and got an assist from Max Martin for it. She traveled to his Sweden compound where he encouraged her to turn what had previously been a verse into the song's chorus. Upon returning to her main producer Rick Nowels' place, she realized the one extra element she needed for the track. That's when she felt she "really wanted" to hear Canadian singer The Weeknd sing the chorus, so he came down and "rewrote a little bit of it," but then she stated she felt like it was missing something, so she went back for a fourth time and layered it up with harmonies.[4] "Lust for Life" was first registered at ASCAP under Del Rey's name during March 2017, with The Weeknd credited as a co-writer under his real name Abel Tesfaye.[5] Later, Del Rey teased the collaboration on March 26, 2017 via Twitter, with Tesfaye's signature logo.[6] The logo, which is also the logo of his record label XO, was also included in the Lust for Life album trailer.[7]
"Lust for Life" was released on April 19, 2017 following the preview on MistaJam's BBC Radio 1 show.[8] The official audio was released to iTunes and other streaming services a few hours later.[2] It is the fourth collaboration between Del Rey and The Weeknd, after she featured on "Prisoner" from his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), and then two collaborations on his follow-up record Starboy (2016): a feature on "Stargirl Interlude" and a co-writing credit and background vocals on "Party Monster".[4][9] This is her first song to feature another artist on any of her studio albums.[10]
Composition
Idolator characterized "Lust for Life" as a "witchy dream pop" song,[11] as well as describing it as a "throwback to the wall of sound production of the '60s with the lush, beautiful harmonies associated with acts like The Shangri-Las".[12]
Music video
An official audio video was released on Del Rey's Vevo channel on the same day the song was released. It features Tesfaye and Del Rey sitting on the edge of the Hollywood sign while holding hands.[13] The clip features interpolation of shots from the album trailer. It was directed by Clark Jackson, who also directed the Lust for Life album trailer and produced the "Love" music video.[14]
The official music video was released on May 22 and was uploaded to Del Rey's Vevo channel. The video was directed by Rich Lee who also directed the "Love" music video.[15] Billboard says that the video kicks off with Del Rey "in a turquoise TV studio wearing a red dress and performing simply choreographed moves with 2 dancers in the background, it all leads to an adventure on, of course, the Hollywood sign. As the track moves into the chorus, Del Rey climbs up a set of stairs that lead to the top of the "H" on the famed California sign, where Abel is there to pull her to the top. The duo make the sign their playground, sitting on the edge of the letters and running all the way across, until Del Rey slides down the "D" and lands in a field of orange flowers."[16] The camera zooms out, showing the Earth, with lights forming a peace sign, in space.
