Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (IATA: LKO, ICAO: VILK) is an airport serving Lucknow, the capital of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated in Amausi in the city of Lucknow, India and was earlier known as Amausi Airport before being renamed after Chaudhary Charan Singh, who was the fifth prime minister of India. the 5th prime minister of India. It is the 11th busiest airport in India and is also the second busiest and largest in North and Central India after IGI Airport at Delhi. It handled about 3.97 million passengers in 2016-17. It was awarded as the second best airport in the world in category of 2-5 million passengers.It is also a focus city for IndiGo.
History
The airport was constructed in 1986 to facilitate corporate and government officials. With an increasing number of passengers, AAI decided to upgrade the airport. On 17 July 2008, the Government of India officially renamed it Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport. It was granted international status in May 2012.[5]
Lucknow Airport, previously called Amausi International Airport is now renamed as Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. It was constructed with the purpose of facilitating VVIPs, it was only in 2005 when the AAI took decision to upgrade the Airport owing to increased number of passengers and also because of introduction of private operators in the sector.[6]
A new terminal, equipped with latest technology, at Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport is operative since June 2, 2012. It is being used both for arrivals and departures of domestic and international flights. The new terminal is a three-tier building which can accommodate around 650 passengers at a time.[6]
Structure
The airport consists of two terminals: domestic and international.AAI has also approved approximately 1200 crore rupees for a new integrated terminal.
- Runway
The airport has a single runway that is 2,800m long.AAI has also planned for runway expansion at Lucknow airport.
- Landing Amenities
CCS International Airport has ILS CAT-III-B compliant for landing in bad weather and foggy conditions.In India only Delhi,Lucknow and Jaipur are the only airports to have ILS CAT-III-B which helps flights to land safely even with a visibility as low as 50 Meters.[7]
Terminals
The airport has two operational terminals and one in planning stage:
- Terminal 1
- The original terminal, built to complement Charbagh Railway Station's architecture, is now used for international flights after the opening of Terminal 2.[8] It has two arrival and three departing gates as well as two immigration counters.
- Terminal 2
- The terminal was inaugurated by civil aviation minister Ajit Singh on 19 May 2012 before opening on 2 June 2012.[9] With five boarding gates, Terminal 2 is used for domestic flights.Terminal 2 of Lucknow airport is dealing with huge passenger traffic year by year.[10]
- Air traffic growth has put some pressure on aerodromes as of 2017. Minister of State for Civil Aviation said, “project management consultant has been awarded for expansion of existing terminal building for an estimated cost of Rs 880 crore”.[11]
- Terminal 3(Proposed)
Work on the third terminal (T3) at the Chaudhary Charan Singh airport in Lucknow will begin soon.The procedure of tendering has been set for the Rs.1200 crore terminal which will be constructed with a vision and needs for the next 20 years.[12]
The Airports Authority of India has decided to set up an all new terminal that would be almost four times the size of the existing one. The old terminal used for international flight operations, essentially to the middle east, would be merged with the existing domestic terminal and to form an integrated one on the lines of those at Delhi and Mumbai. The new terminal is expected to cater to over 6 million passengers and would have three underground subways leading to the Metro station in Amausi. One passage is proposed to be provided from the existing terminal, while the new building will have two more subways leading to the metro station. The government has also decided to connect the Lucknow airport to the Shaheed Path.[13]
The construction is estimated to take about 57 months while survey, designing and approval survey, Project Investment Board clearance are likely to take another nine months.[14]

Connectivity
The nearest major railway station is Lucknow Charbagh railway station which is roughly 10 km from the airport campus.Airport is well connected with the cab service.
CCS International Airport will be connected through Lucknow Metro by a terminal station on the North-South Corridor Line.Metro connection will make ease for passengers.
Awards
- The airport was awarded AAI's "Best Airport" award in July 2013 along with Jodhpur Airport.[15]
- Lucknow airport was rated second best in the category of small airports catering to 2-5 million passengers per annum by Airports Council International, a global non-profit organisation of airport operators.[16]
