Loyola Degree College, Manvi, was founded by the Society of Jesus in Karnataka State, India, in 2012, in a tribal area near Manvi. Like its sister institution on the same campus, it is coeducational and tries to maintain a large enrollment of girls. Its aim is to grow into the first university founded specifically to give the Dalits a chance for a university education,[2] and now offers both the bachelor's and master's degrees.[3]

History

In 2009, some Jesuits dreamt of providing a university for Dalits within 25 years. The dream began to materialize rather sooner when the funds were found to dig foundations and start building floor by floor. The first classrooms were occupied in 2012 and the building was completed three years later. This building represents a culmination of the Jesuits' vision for elevating and empowering the Dalits. Since the Mission began the Fathers and teachers have had great belief in the students' abilities that has been, and is being realised as a result of years of hard work on the part of the students and their lecturers.

Students receive state subsidies for the tuition part of their expenses, according to their need each year (depending on the rain and harvest). The College accepts students from neighbouring high schools who are richer and can afford the full fees, in order to partially subsidise the poorer students whose contributions are limited.[3]

Facilities

Facilities include a playground, laboratory, computer center, health center, indoor gym, and guest house.[4]
