A state election is scheduled to be held in Lower Saxony on 15 October 2017 to elect the 137 members of the Landtag.

In the 2013 elections, the SPD-Green coalition gained a one-seat majority and replaced the CDU-FDP coalition.

On 11 October 2016, the state cabinet decided to schedule the election for 14 January 2018.[1] In November 2016, the CDU nominated Bernd Althusmann as their Spitzenkandidat.[2]

On 7 August 2017, it was decided to hold the election almost three months early, due to the ruling coalition losing its one-seat majority after Elke Twesten switched allegiance from the Greens to the CDU.[3]
