Lombo de Figueira is a settlement in the eastcentral part of the island of Santo Antão, Cape Verde and belongs to the municipality of Porto Novo and the parish of São João Batista. Its 2010 population was 281. It is situated about 20 km west of the island capital Porto Novo. The settlements in the small dale hence its etymology.
Subdivisions include Mesa located 2 km south and Lombo de Figueira.
Nearby settlements include Ribeira Grande Municipality's Corda to the north, Ribeirão Fundo to the east and Morro de Vento to the west.
About the settlement
The settlement sits on Estrada da Corda linking the island capital Porto Novo and Corda, the east-west boundary also being the boundary between the North and South parts of the island's two football (soccer) association. Until 2009, it once served as the main road between the island capital along with the south and the west of the island and Ribeira Grande and the north of the island including Paul, it has been bypassed by Estrada Litoral (EN1-SA01) which access near the island's easternmost point Ponta do Tumbo.
Agriculture is the only industry in the settlement.
As the area was barren grassland and rarely forested, in the late 20th century, many of the settlement area would be forested with pine and oak trees, these makes up of the Cape Verde Islands dry forests, around 2010, it dominates most of the settlement area, the south is not included.
A species of butterflies Chilades evorae and Leptotes pirithous capverti, a subspecies of Leptotes pirithous are founded in the area as well as nearby Morro Vento and Ribeirão Fundo. No date of discovery has been known, it was recorded in November 2009 by Michel Libert and Lucas and Simon Balliteau and was named in 2011.[2]
Geology
Its geology is inside the Cova Group of rock formation that includes Paul and Corda. The formation was formed around 1.4 million to 700,000 years ago.[3]
Climate
Its climate is nearly the same as that of nearby Corda with 15 C in January and over 19 C in July and its precipitation wet in most of the year, unlike Corda, the southern areas are warmer being in warmer elevations, temperatures in Mesa are around 17 C in January to 21 C in June and a little drier.
