Liz in September, originally titled Liz en Septiembre, is a 2014 Venezuelan drama directed by Fina Torres,[1][2] based on the play Last Summer at Bluefish Cove by Jane Chambers.[3][4][5] A work-in-progress version of the film was screened in 2013 and the finished version of the movie released in Venezuela on 3 October 2014.
During its marketing campaign Liz in September was marketed as the first Spanish language lesbian film.[6] Of this, actress Patricia Velásquez stated that she and the other crew did not immediately think of the film in this fashion during its initial stages of production, but came to realize its importance to others during the filming process.[6]
Synopsis
Liz (Patricia Velásquez) is celebrating her birthday with friends at a seaside hotel ran by Margot. Eva (Eloísa Maturén) is headed to another location but after her car breaks down she is forced to stay the night at Margot's hotel. Eva is oblivious to being the only heterosexual woman at the hotel. Liz is bet by her friend, Alex, to seduce the "straight girl" by the end of the weekend. Liz uses her beauty and ruthless conquering philosophy to captivate Eva's attention and prevent her from leaving the hotel. A mutual attraction develops between Liz and Eva that has the potential to be Liz's last love.

A work in progress version of Liz in September screened at the Miami International Film Festival in March 2013 and the final version of the movie released in Venezuela the following year.[7] The film then went on to screen at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and the Frameline Film Festival in 2015.[8][3]
Reception
Critical reception for Liz in September has been favorable.[9] Variety gave the movie a favorable review, commenting that although some of the stage play's elements did not fully work in the film, the movie "will be a crowdpleaser primarily among lesbian audiences in various formats."[10] AfterEllen and The Hollywood Reporter also praised the film, with The Hollywood Reporter writing that the movie was "a moving if slightly conventional drama".[11][12]
El Nacional was critical of the movie, as they felt that the "story loses power due to the weakness of the script" and that Liz in September didn't give as deep a look into its themes as it otherwise could have.[13]
