In August 2016, the The East African reported that annual production was at about 12,000 metric tonnes against domestic consumption of about 90,000 metric tonnes.[2] The difference is imported from Uganda and from distant places including China and South America.[3]
The new sugar factory by Mauritian investors, with planned capacity of 1000,000 metric tonnes annually is expected to start production sometime in 2022.[1]
