List of films banned in Malaysia

This is a list of films banned (Rejected) in Malaysia. Films that are assigned the "Tidak Diluluskan Untuk Tayangan" category by the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia are banned for sale, possession, distribution and screening. Screening rejected films, possessing, selling, or even owning them in private is forbidden and strictly enforced and can be punished with severe fines, up to 20 years imprisonment or both.

1956 The King and I Banned due to offense from neighboring country Thailand.[2] It was passed in 2005 with a VCD release and a DVD release from Fox Malaysia.
1956 The Ten Commandments Banned by Paramount Malaysia (now United International Pictures) due to religious content.[1]

1964 491 Banned due to a homosexual rape scene; a censored version was later released.[1]
1968 Rosemary's Baby Banned by Paramount's request due to high impact terror. Passed in 1997 with a home video release by CIC Video.[1]

1975 Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom Banned due to "repulsive, outrageous and abhorrent content." However, Pier Paolo Pasolini's last film was banned at all country.[1]

1979 Alien Was not released in cinemas. Passed in 2001 by Fox Malaysia with a home video release.[1]
1980-present The entire Friday the 13th films due to high impact cruelty and violence. [1]
1980 The Shining 1980 film by Stanley Kubrick. Passed and approved by Warner Malaysia and Movie Master with a VCD and DVD release cut in 1999.
1981 My Bloody Valentine The 2009 3D remake has been banned as well.[1]

1994 Pulp Fiction Banned due to intense violence, drug abuse, explicit nudity, and scenes of sexual violence.[1]
1995 Babe Banned due to "babe" sounding similar to "babi," the Malay word for "pig," which is non-Halal; also portrays pigs in a positive light.[2][4]
1995 Piranha (1995 film) (1995) Banned due to intense violence and cruelty. However, the original 1978 film of the same name is allowed.[1]
1995 Seven
1995 Showgirls banned due to strong sexual content, including scenes of female nudity and sexual violence.[1]
1996−present All of the entries in the British horror drama Silent Witness have been banned. [1]
1996 Beavis & Butthead Do America banned due to strong sexual content, crude humor, and violence.[1]

1998 The Prince of Egypt Never released in cinemas because the censor body ruled that the film is "insensitive for religious and moral reasons".[9] The film was passed for VCD and DVD release by Berjaya HVN
1998 Babe: Pig in the City Banned due to its title and subject matter not being halal (pigs—whether or not they're used as food—are considered highly taboo in the Muslim religion, of which Malaysia has a sizeable population). Released direct-to-VHS when the ruling was overturned almost a year later.[4]
1998 Saving Private Ryan never released in cinemas, passed for VCD and DVD release by Berjaya HVN[1]
1998 Bride of Chucky banned due to very high-impact violence and cruelty[1]
1999–2011 Family Guy Due to crude, politically incorrect humor and strong comic violence. Now available on Fox Channel Asia
1999 Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me never released in cinemas due to comedic sexual content, but passed for a VCD release and delayed DVD release by Sunny Film Productions.[1]
1999 Fight Club Never released in cinemas. Ban lifted a year later and was given a heavily censored VCD and DVD release from Berjava HVN.[1]
1999 South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut banned due to "vulgar, offensive content" (the television series was banned for the same reason, but now the TV series is available on HyppTV ).[1]

1999 American Beauty banned for strong sexual content (including scenes depicting pedophilia and homosexuality)
1999 Eyes Wide Shut Due to strong sexual contents, but now available at Google Play Store Movie.

However, they later allowed the film to be screened in the country after Tsai agreed to censor parts of the film according to the requirements of the Censorship Board.[12]
2008 Anaconda 3: Offspring banned due to very high-impact violence and cruelty.[1] However the big screen versions to the series, Anaconda (1997) and Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid (2004) are allowed.

2017 Wonder Woman Banned by Warner Malaysia prior to its premiere and the official release on the account of the film's leading star Gal Gadot's service in the Israeli Army. Passed uncut and is slated for a home media and digital HD and online download release by this fall.
