- A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Guerrero, Mexico on January 1 at a depth of 29.4 km (18.3 mi).[1]
October
- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck near Taiwan on October 15 mid-day local time at a depth of 94.4 km (58.7 mi). The epicenter was located 85 km (53 mi) East of Su-ao, and 130 km (81 mi) southeast of Taipei, Taiwan. The quake was felt in the Ryukyu Islands as well as in Taiwan.
December
- A magnitude 9.2 earthquake struck Sumatra, Indonesia on December 26, causing a destructive tsunami which killed over 250,000 people, making it the deadliest tsunami ever recorded. The waves reached as far as Africa.
