Arkansas is a state located in the Southern United States. According to the 2010 United States Census, Arkansas is the 33rd most populous state with 2,915,958 inhabitants and the 27th largest by land area spanning 52,035.48 square miles (134,771.3 km2) of land.[1] Arkansas is divided into 75 counties and contains 502 incorporated municipalities consisting of cities and towns.[2]
Arkansas municipalities are divided into three categories based on population.[3] City of the First Class has a population over 2,500, City of the Second Class has a population between 500 and 2,499 population and an Incorporated Town has 499 or fewer population. Arkansas does not use villages or civil townships as possible designations for its minor civil divisions.[4] In Arkansas, a municipality may extend into multiple counties.
