Neerja is a 2016 Indian biographical thriller film directed by Ram Madhvani and produced by Atul Kasbekar.[1] The film stars Sonam Kapoor as the eponymous protagonist, and features Shabana Azmi, Yogendra Tiku and Shekhar Ravjiani in supporting roles.[2][3][4] The film's script and screenplay were penned by Saiwyn Quadras, and the dialogue was written by Sanyuktha Chawla Sheikh. The editing for the film was done by Monisha R Baldawa and Manohar Verma served as the stunt director for the film.[5][1] Set in the city of Mumbai, the plot of Neerja centers on the Libyan-backed Abu Nidal Organization's hijacking of Pan Am Flight 73 in Karachi, Pakistan, on 5 September 1986. The film is shown from the point of view of the flight's head purser, Neerja Bhanot, who died saving passengers on the hijacked flight.[2]

Made on a budget of 20 crore (US$3.1 million),[6] Neerja was released on 19 February 2016, and grossed 135 crore (US$21 million) worldwide.[7] The film garnered awards and nominations in several categories, with particular praise for its direction and the performance of Sonam Kapoor. As of 15 July 2017, the film has won 39 awards.

The film won two awards: Best Feature Film in Hindi and a Special Jury Award for Kapoor—at the 64th ceremony of India's National Film Awards.[8] At the 62nd Filmfare Awards ceremony, Neerja won five awards, including Critics Award for Best film and Critics Award for Best Actress;[9] the film was also nominated for Best Director and Best Film.[10] At the 2016 Screen Awards, it received nomination for Best Actress,[11] and won four awards, including Best Director.[12] Neerja won four awards at the 18th ceremony of the International Indian Film Academy Awards, including Best Film and Best Supporting Actress;[13] it also garnered three nominations, including Best Director and Best Actress.[14] At the 2017 Zee Cine Awards, the film won awards in seven categories, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actress.[15] Neerja was voted the most liked female-centric film of 2016.[16]
