Attention MCTS Freeway Flyer & UBUS Riders
Pertains to customers who Ride ONLY local streets on a Freeway Flyer Route Effective Monday, September 29, 2014, the Milwaukee County Transit System will be implementing a new policy that will require any person riding on a Freeway Flyer route – even just a short segment of the route- to pay the Freeway Flyer fare. This will NOT affect most riders and fares are NOT changing. Riders will still pay with a valid pass (i.e. CVP, U-PASS), Weekly/Monthly pass with cash premium, or the cash fare of $3.25 adult/$1.60 reduced. In the past, MCTS was able to accommodate riders who rode Freeway Flyers for just a short distance by charging them a regular local fare ($2.25 adult cash or $1.1.0 reduced). MCTS will no longer be able to provide this service. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation as we implement this policy. Two of them serve MATC Downtown Campus, one serves the Mequon Campus, and one serves the Oak Creek Campus. One route also serves Concordia University in Mequon. These routes operate similar to Freeway Flyer routes and require a $1.00 surcharge to ride. They operate all day long during the UWM and MATC school year, usually are scheduled to meet most class start and end times, and run a special schedule during exam week. Summer service is dependent on available funding. Route 16 (now route 44U) operated during summer 2005, however no UBUS service operated during summer 2006

Past bus routes
Over the years, some bus routes have disappeared due to low ridership and/or funding cuts. Some bus routes have been discarded, only to return over the years. Others have simply been altered. For completeness purposes however, former information is listed here. Among those include:
- 1: Metrolink Northwest Express. The Metrolink service was the highly successful implementation of all-day express service along the Northwest Corridor (Fond du Lac Avenue). Service began on January 12, 1992, replacing the rush-hour-only Route 23X along with shuttle Route 9 on the northwest side. Route 1 operated seven days a week from the now-defunct Northridge Mall, N/S on 76th, and SE/NW on Fond du Lac Avenue, making stops at major intersections and transfer points. From Fond du Lac and Walnut, eastbound buses operated a short distance on I-43 to 11th & Wells, and E/W on Wisconsin Avenue to the Downtown Transit Center (westbound buses operated N on 12th Street to Walnut, and then NW on Fond du Lac Avenue). Route 1 was popular with passengers due to its limited stops, which offered great time savings over Route 23 when heading to or from downtown. The main route to Northridge was supplemented with weekday rush-hour service along the Congress/91st and 64th/Mill branches (see Route 23). Unfortunately, due to massive budget cuts, Route 1 was discontinued in December, 2002, despite the route's high ridership. The primary reason for the loss of Route 1 was that it "duplicated" Routes 23 and 67 most of the way.
- 2: Metrolink Southwest Express The Metrolink was the highly successful implementation of all-day express service along the southwest corridor, similar to the Route 1. Route ran from 76th & Edgerton N/S on 76th Street to Cold Spring Road, E/W on Cold Spring to Forest Home Avenue, NE/SW on Forest Home to Muskego Avenue, NE/SW on Muskego to 16th Street, N/S on 16th to Wisconsin Avenue, and E/W on Wisconsin to the Downtown Transit Center. Introduced in August 1993, reduced to rush hour service in January 1995 and discontinued in late 2001.
- 3: Metrolink Bluemound Express The Metrolink service was the highly successful implementation of all-day express bus service linking Downtown Milwaukee to Brookfield Square Mall. Introduced in 1997, it was cut a year later due to funding issues.
- 4: Bay View/Hamilton High School
- 5: Oklahoma UBUS Runs E/W on Oklahoma Avenue, from 116th Street in West Allis to Cheese Avenue on the Milwaukee side to UWM. Route 5 was discontinued in August 2004.
- 6 the 1st: Silver Spring UBUS. Started in 1975 and discontinued in 1979.
- 6 the 2nd: Oak Creek I-BUS. Started in March 1981 and discontinued in late 1993.
- 6 the 3rd: Quad/Graphics New Berlin/West Allis. Served the Quad/Graphics plants in New Berlin and West Allis The route started at Teutonia & Capital and operated through the northwest side of Milwaukee, connecting with many major routes along the way. The route ran seven days per week, and offered two trips per day. The trips are scheduled to meet Quad's 7:00 shift change time (the company has 12-hour shifts, that change at 7:00 A.M. and P.M.). The route was eliminated in December 2004 after Quad Graphics stopped funding for the route.
- 8 the 1st: Glendale I-BUS. Started in June 1990 in place of Route 29 and discontinued in late 1993.
- 8 the 2nd: Quad/Graphics Sussex/Pewaukee. Served the Quad/Graphics plants in Pewaukee and Sussex The route started at Kinnicknnic & Mitchell, and operated through the northwest side of Milwaukee, connecting with major routes along the way.
The route ran seven days per week, and offered two trips per day. The trips are scheduled to meet Quad's 7:00 shift change time (the company has 12-hour shifts, that change at 7:00 A.M. and P.M.). A similar service, route eliminated in mid-2010 (June 27, 2010) after Quad Graphics stopped funding for the route.
- 9 the 1st: Northwest Shuttle. Started in February 1991 and discontinued and replaced by Route 1 in January 1992.
- 9 the 2nd: Menomonee Falls-Butler. Serves various businesses in the Menomonee Falls and Butler areas along its route between 124th Street and Capital Drive (connecting with route 62) and Lovers Lane & Silver Spring Drive (connecting with routes 28 and 63). This route offers service during weekday rush hours only. Route 9 connects with routes 28, 62, and 63. Route 9 was discontinued in late 2007.
