List of Indian business school rankings

Various newspapers and industry magazines publish lists of rankings of business schools in India. Whilst criteria for each publication differs, business schools included in rankings are those with full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programs. Factors normally taken into account include placement, quality of faculty, quality of students, quality of infrastructure, industry brand image and strength and influence of alumni network.

Allegations of corruption in business school rankings

There are a number of reasons why business school rankings that appear in media are considered inaccurate:[1]

1. Business schools manipulate the data provided to ranking providers.

2. Manipulation in data related to campus placement. In 2011, IIM Ahmedabad initiated the Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) to make placement reports transparent. Till the end of academic year 2014-15, only nine institutes went for auditing their placement data with an independent third party auditor. For 2012-14 batch, only four business schools willed to audit their placement report.[2][3]

3. Ranking providers giving favorable rankings to institutions that give advertisements and sponsorships to these magazines, and their events.[4]

4. All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the regulatory body for technical education in India, has called "upon the students, parents and the general public not to pay any capitation fee or any other fee other than that mentioned in the Prospectus of the Institutions for consideration of admission.".[5] AICTE also mentions that the fee charged from students, including for programs such as PGDM, has to be approved by the fee regulatory committee of the state, and the institute should mention the fee in its website.[6] As per AICTE norms, the business schools are not meant to charge a fee higher than what is mentioned in the prospectus. Many business schools provide only the data related to the officially recognised fee for the ranking providers, while taking fee from students under various other parameters (including capitation fee). Many business schools do not list the fee in the prospectus. All these contributes to make the ranking process a "Tamasha".[7]

5. Parameters that ascertain the quality of business education in these rankings are not yet comprehensive. Assessments done by Aspen Institute for ascertaining the quality of MBA programs attempted at considering broader parameters. One parameter included in their assessment was the number of courses offered in the business school that contain social, environmental or ethical component. Other parameters in this assessment included the number of teaching hours devoted to such courses that contain social, environmental or ethical component, the number of scholarly articles published by faculty members in peer-review business journals that contain social, environmental or ethical content etc.[8]

Suggestions to curb these manipulations in business school rankings included a stoppage of education related advertisements, consolidating a large number of inferior quality surveys to few high quality surveys that include visits and audit of these institutions and the data they provide, and mandatory auditing of placement reports.[9]

In spite of the allegations of inaccuracy due to vested interests, the business school rankings of leading MBA sites are still considered as a fair guiding direction for students when evaluating their choice of colleges. Also, the fact that admissions to top Indian colleges, specifically the IIMs are considered to be the most competitive in the world,[10] result in heavier importance being attached to the IIMs as brand as compared to individual rankings.

Institutions, such as FMS Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai, business schools under central universities (for example: University of Hyderabad, Pondicherry University, Benares Hindu University) and state universities, business schools under some of the IITs, IISc etc. offer an MBA that charge a considerably lower fee from the student.[11][12][13][14][15] Some of these institutions are also ranked amongst the top 100 business schools in India. However, business school ranking parameters do not consider the 'comprehensive fee that a student has to pay' as a parameter/ do not give due weightage to this parameter.
