Death in Paradise was first commissioned in 2010 by the BBC and originally starred Ben Miller as D.I. Richard Poole and Sara Martins as D.S. Camille Bordey. The first series began airing in October 2011. The show was recommissioned and a second series aired in January 2013. A third series was confirmed in February 2013 and aired in January 2014.[1] Miller, who had previously announced he would be leaving the show, left after the first episode and was replaced by Kris Marshall.[2]
On 28 February 2014, BBC confirmed that Death in Paradise would return for a fourth series, which began filming in May 2014 and was broadcast in early 2015.[3] Sara Martins left midway through the series four and was replaced by French actress Joséphine Jobert, as the character Florence Cassell, Jobert's first English speaking role.[4][5] In February 2015, a fifth series, which began airing in 2016, was confirmed, while a sixth series was confirmed in February 2016 and began airing in early 2017. To date, 48 episodes have aired. Kris Marshall left before two final episodes of series 6 and was replaced by Ardal O'Hanlon.

On 12 February 2013, after high ratings for the second series, Death in Paradise was re-commissioned for a third series, which began airing on 14 January 2014.[10] Miller exited the show during the first episode of the series as his character was killed off.

The death of scientist Stephen Langham on the side of a live volcano proves a difficult case to crack for Humphrey and the team when everything appears to point to a death from natural causes. Florence finds herself emotionally involved in a case when a former schoolmate, Esther Monroe, is found dead at the foot of a cliff during a literary festival. The prime suspects for the murder include Sylvie Baptiste (Angela Wynter), writer of the infamous local novel The Flame Tree; her assistant, Patricia Lawrence (Monica Dolan); and festival organisers Anna (Fiona Allen) and Oliver Wolf (Ramon Tikaram). Whilst searching for possible witnesses to the murder, Dwayne and JP come across a frightened woman living in a wooden shack on the outskirts of Sylvie Baptiste's estate. Humphrey and Martha's romantic weekend at the remote Hotel Cecile is disrupted by the murder of hotel owner Charlie Taylor (Mark Powley) on the first night of their stay. Humphrey's dilemma, however, is that the only access to the victim's bedroom is via the main staircase, which he had his eyes on the entire time. With no other points of access, Humphrey is bewildered as to how the murderer managed to attack Charlie and leave the room unnoticed. Suspicion initially falls upon hotel receptionist Irie Johnson (Kingsley Ben-Adir), whom Charlie discovered was masterminding a racket involving the cloning of customer's credit cards. In DI Jack Mooney's first official case in paradise, tourist Tyler McCarthy (John Ross Bowie) comes to Honoré police offering an alibi for Nadine Hunter (Olivia Llewellyn), a journalist convicted of the murder of her boss, Julie Matlock (Susannah Doyle) in 2009. With Nadine having died in prison from pneumonia, Tyler's only intention is to clear Nadine's name, and uncover the true identity of the killer. With all four of Julie's colleagues having been previously investigated and cleared, Mooney and the team have a mammoth task of breaking each of their rock solid alibis. Meanwhile, Dwayne tries to connect with an old flame during festival season on the island, but soon discovers that his memories of his former lovers may have become cross-wired. | ||||||

The Saint Marie mayoral elections are thrown into disarray when one of the candidates, Victor Pearce, is stabbed to death in the polling booth while casting his vote. Fellow candidate Peter Baxter (Nicholas Gleaves), the victim's son Kemar (Ash Hunter) and polling station staff Matthew Dawson (Dominic Coleman), Edwina Bousquet and Judith Dawson all have rock-solid alibis for the time of the murder, leaving Catherine as the only remaining suspect. Convinced that their old friend could not be responsible for murder, the team look at how a missing pen and a malfunctioning fan could be bigger clues as to how the murder actually took place. Meanwhile, DI Mooney is forced to make the tough decision whether or not to stay on the island as the resident detective. |
