Season-by-season

2016–17

This season marked Athletic's return to European competition after an 8-year absence. It didn't progress past the first round as Fortuna Hjørring knocked them out with a last-minute goal in the extra time.[1] In the following games Athletic lost against all other top-table teams (Atlético, Barcelona, Valencia and Levante) and for the rest of the season the team struggled to keep their path. It ended the championship in the 5th position, Athletic's worst result in the championship since the 2005–06 season, when coincidentally it was also the defending champion. In the Copa de la Reina it was subsequently defeated in the first round for the third time in a row by Valencia.[2]
