List of ABA National Champions
An Australian Basketball Association (ABA) National Champion was determined every year between 1981 and 2008 in the men's competition, and every year between 1990 and 2008 in the women's competition—barring 2001 when the National Finals were cancelled due to the collapse of Ansett Airlines.[1][2] The ABA's roots can be traced back as far as 1965, when just eight clubs competed in the South Eastern Conference (SEC). The SEC continued until 1971 when the Australian Club Championships gained pre-eminence. The SEC was reborn as the South Eastern Basketball League (SEBL) in 1981, and went on to become the ABA in 1999. The ABA had a number of different names over the years, starting with South Eastern Conference (1965–1970), then South Eastern Basketball League (1981–1987), South East Australian Basketball League (1988–1991), Continental Basketball Association (1992–1998), and Australian Basketball Association (1999–2008). In 1990, a women's competition was introduced for the first time.
The culmination of the annual National Finals was the Grand Final, and the winner of the one-game championship decider was crowned National Champion. Between 1981 and 1993, the ABA consisted solely of today's South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). The National Finals became truly national in 1994 when a North Conference from Queensland was added for the first time alongside the South and East conferences. By 2001, the ABA consisted of six men's conferences and five women's conferences. The ABA National Finals became known as the Australian Club Championships (ACC) in 2007 and continued on as such in 2008. Following the 2008 season, Basketball Australia's Competitions Commission took over the management of all state-based leagues and competitions from 2009 onwards, thus disbanding the ABA and leaving its affiliated conferences to become independent leagues.
