Leo XIII Institute, Milan, was founded by the Jesuits in 1893. It includes primary school, secondary school, grammar school, and science high school. The coat of arms of the school includes the IHS of the Society of Jesus, the cross of St. George which symbolizes the city of Milan, and the seal of Pope Leo XIII of the noble Sienese family of Pecci.
History
The school has moved several times, from Porta Nuova to Villa Sacro Cuore in Triuggio, to the institute of the Ursuline sisters in via Parini in World War II times, and in 1950 to its present location in via Leone XIII's Fiera.
Prominent Jesuit alunmi include Gian Paolo Salvini, future director of "La Civiltà Cattolica", and Paul Dezza (1901-1999), future rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University, confessor of Pope Paul VI, and created cardinal by John Paul II in 1991.
In 2008 the actor and former student Luke Barbareschi publicly denounced cases of sexual abuse against him in the 60s at the Institute, by a Jesuit priest.[1]
Rectors
Traditionally from the foundation of the institute rectors were Jesuit priests. The current dean is Gabriella Tona, the first woman and the first lay person to perform this task in Italy.[2] She had earlier been a science teacher in the high school, headmaster of the grammar school, and later of both the high schools (classical and scientific).
Sport
Sports facilities include a swimming pool, 4 gyms (one with bleachers), a soccer field and rugby field both with artificial turf, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, and a running track. Through sports associations the school participates in competitive swimming, basketball, football, volleyball, and athletics. Start-up activities and sports promotion include mini-basketball, mini-volleyball, football, gymnastics, and dance.
Library
The institute's library has about 100,000 volumes, including a collection of 11 Incunable, 500 sixteenth century items, and several thousand from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is registered in the national catalog of Italyian libraries and since 1997 is part of the project of the national library service. It specializes in humanities (Italian literature, Greek and Latin, history, philosophy, art) and religious topics (theology, liturgy, the Society of Jesus).[3]
