Lovelyz (Hangul: 러블리즈) is a South Korean girl group formed in 2014 by Woollim Entertainment and its company first girl group. The group consists of eight members: Baby Soul, Jiae, Jisoo, Mijoo, Kei, Jin, Sujeong and Yein. Their debut album, Girls' Invasion, was released on November 17, 2014.[1]

History

2014: Debut, Girls' Invasion

On November 5, 2014 Lovelyz's debut was first announced by Woolim Entertainment.[2] Prior to debut, Seo Jisoo withdrew for personal reasons.[3] On November 10, Lovelyz released the digital single "Good Night Like Yesterday". Their debut showcase was on November 12 at the K-ART Hall in Olympic Park, and their debut stage was the next day on M! Countdown.[4] Lovelyz's debut album, Girls' Invasion with lead single "Candy Jelly Love" were released on November 17.[5] The album ranked ninth on Taiwan's Five Music Korea-Japan weekly chart and first on Japan's Tower Records albums chart.[6]

Lovelyz in SBS Gayo Daejun

On December 21, the group took part in the annual music festival SBS Gayo Daejeon for the festival's segment Strong Babies which featured newly debuted K-Pop groups. Lovelyz performed "Candy Jelly Love" and "Moves Like Jagger" along with Red Velvet, Winner, and Got7.[7]

2015: Hi~, Lovelyz8 and Lovelinus

Lovelyz released repackage edition for Girls' Invasion titled Hi~ on March 3. It contained the original tracks from Girls' Invasion along with two new songs including the single of the same name.[8]They made comeback stage with performing Hi~ and Joyland on March 5 on music program M Countdown.[9]On April 17, Lovelyz continue promotions on music shows with the other new song from their repackaged edition, Amusement Park.[10] They continued promotions until April 30. On April 22 Lovelyz participated in the KCON 2015 Japan M!Countdown show for 15,000 people, their first overseas activity.[11] On May 23, the group performed at Dream Concert in the Seoul World Cup Stadium.[12]

On August 27, Lovelyz performed at the Korea Brand and Entertainment Expo in Shanghai along with Infinite.[13] On the same day, Woollim Entertainment announced that Jisoo would be rejoining the group, and the mini-album titled Lovelyz8 through the official Twitter page.[14]

Lovelyz pre-release single called Shooting Star was released on September 14. Following their second extended plays, Lovelyz8 released on October 1, 2015. It contained seven tracks including pre-release Shooting Star and lead single Ah-Choo.[1]The title track music video was released in the same day with cameo appearance by Infinite's Hoya.[15]

On October 31, Lovelyz was a guest on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook where they performed an a cappella cover of Michael Jackson's song "Beat It". The performance was broadcast on the American Fox News Channel and written about by other foreign media.[16][17] Ah-Choo has maintained its position on most major Korean music charts through 2015 and into 2016, making it Lovelyz's biggest hit.[18]

Lovelyz held their first fan-meeting and mini-concert, Lovely Day on December 5 at Ax Korea. The tickets were sold out in the first five minutes after they went on sale.[19] On December 7, Lovelyz released the three track single album Lovelinus, after the name of their official fan club. They also released music video for their title track, For You in the same day.[20]

2016–present: A New Trilogy, First Concert and R U READY

Lovelyz's first reality show Lovelyz in Wonderland began airing February 2 on SBS MTV.[21] Their song Ah-Choo continues to remain in digital Korean music charts long after its release, on September 14, 2015.[22]

Lovelyz released their second mini album, A New Trilogy on April 25, 2016. The album contains seven tracks with lead single titled Destiny.[23] The title track was debuting at number seven on the Gaon Digital Chart, making it their highest charting song so far.[24]

In November 2016, Lovelyz announced to be holding their first solo concert since debut titled Lovelyz in Winterland at the Blusquare Samsung Card Hall from January 13–15, 2017.[25] At the concert it was revealed that Lovelyz would make a comeback in February.

Woollim Entertainment announced that Lovelyz was set to release their second studio album R U READY? on February 27.[26] Woollim Entertainment announced that Yein had injured her ankle during practice for comeback and may be unable to promote.[27] On March 2, Woollim Entertainment confirmed that Yein won't be participating in this comeback due to her ankle being injured.[28]It was confirmed that Yein will join promotions on March 23 for M Countdown after recovering from injury.[29]

Following their second studio album release, they made a speedy comeback with their second repackaged album titled "Now, We" on May 2. They also won their first music broadcast trophy on May 16, through SBS MTV's The Show.[30]

On June 1 Woollim entertainment announced that Lovelyz will held their second solo concert titled Alwayz at Olympic Park Olympic Hall from July 29-30, 2017. Ticket presale for fanclub opened on June 21 and were sold out within five minutes. The ticket available for general public on June 23 and were sold out within a minute.

Baby Soul

Baby Soul (Hangul: 베이비소울) was born Lee Soo-jung (Hangul: 이수정) on July 6, 1992 in Gwangju, South Korea.[31] Baby Soul made her first appearance in 2011 by featuring on the subunit Infinite H's song "Crying" from Infinite's Over The Top album. In November 2011, she made her debut as a female solo artist with the single No Better than Stranger featuring Wheesung.[32][33] In January 2012, Baby Soul made her first live appearance at Infinite's Second Invasion Concert performing "Crying" with Infinite H.[34] Shortly after that appearance, Baby Soul and former Woolim trainee Yoo Jia released a single entitled She's A Flirt featuring Dong Woo from Infinite.[32] In July 2012, she performed with Sung Kyu and Dong Woo on Immortal Songs 2 for the song "Woman On The Beach".[32] In 2013, Baby Soul featured on the Infinite H's song Fly High.[35]

Jiae

Yoo Ji-ae (Hangul: 유지애) was born on May 21, 1993 in Seoul, South Korea.[31] Jiae made her debut the same time as Infinite in their 2010 'reality' show "Infinite You Are My Oppa". After two months of filming with Infinite, Jiae auditioned and entered Woollim Entertainment as a trainee.[36] Initially signed to Woollim Entertainment as an actress, Jiae expressed her interest in singing. In 2012, she made a guest appearance on Running Man with other trainees. In 2013, Jiae made her solo debut with the track Delight, featuring Baro of B1A4 in the music video.[32]

Jisoo

Seo Ji-soo (Hangul: 서지수) was born on February 11, 1994 in Incheon, South Korea.[31] Prior to joining the group, she was first known through her imitation of animal sounds on tvN's Korea's Got Talent.[37]

Soon after the announcement of the group's debut on November 3, 2014, Jisoo became the target of online harassment.[38][39] As a result, she was withdrawn from the group's activities and was admitted to the hospital to receive medical treatment for mental shock.[39][40] Jisoo and her agency later submitted evidence at the Seoul Mapo Police Station.[40] The police later identified the person, who was sent to the prosecution on January 20, 2015.[41] On May 8, 2015, two individuals (whose names were withheld) who spread false online rumors about Jisoo were arrested for the summary offence of defamation and slander and were also charged with a fine.[42]

On August 8, 2015, Infinite revealed that the original music video for their song "Last Romeo" starred Infinite's L and Jisoo as the main lead couple. The original music video was not released as planned due to an untimely coincidence with the Sewol ferry accident.[43]

Mijoo

Lee Mi-joo (Hangul: 이미주) was born on September 23, 1994 in Okcheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea.[31] She made her first appearance in May 2014 and was featured as the lead actress in Infinite's "Last Romeo" music video.[44] During "Destiny" promotion, she had injured her ankle and took hiatus for one-week.[45] She's become a guest in Running Man episode 313 and appeared in a September episode of Mnet's dance competition show Hit the Stage.[46]

Kei

Kei (Hangul: 케이) was born Kim Ji-yeon (Hangul: 김지연) on March 20, 1995 in Incheon, South Korea.[31] In December 2015, Kei released a track entitled "Love Like That" for the soundtrack of the KBS drama Oh My Venus. She later released a track "Shooting" for soundtrack of the MBC drama Lucky Romance on May 25, 2016. Kei started her acting career in 2016 with played lead role in web-drama "Matching! Boys Archery Club".[47] She was cast on JTBC's Girl Spirit female idol singing show which began airing on July 19, 2016.[48]She released "Star and Sun" for soundtrack of the MBC drama Monarch - Owner of the Mask on May 26, 2017.[49]

Jin

Jin (Hangul: 진) was born Park Myung-eun (Hangul: 박명은) on June 12, 1996 in Busan, South Korea.[31] Jin debuted to the public late 2013 with the song Gone which featured Exo's Xiumin and actress Kim Yoo Jung as the main actors in the video.[50]

Sujeong

Ryu Su-jeong (Hangul: 류수정) was born on November 19, 1997 in Daejeon, South Korea.[31]In January 2015, Sujeong featuring on the subunit Infinite H's song "Bump" from Infinite H's Fly Again album. In 2016, Sujeong recorded The Beginning Of Love featured Brown Eyed Soul's YoungJun. Sujeong released Sunny Day for The Second Last Love soundtrack with Baby Soul. In April 2017, it was announced that Sujeong will be one of the main cast of KBS2 new web variety, "Idol Drama Operation Team", and introduced herself as being in charge of musical instruments as she can play keyboards and guitar.

Jeong Ye-in (Hangul: 정예인) was born on June 4, 1998 in Incheon, South Korea.[31] She is the youngest member of the group (maknae). She was a former trainee of JYP Entertainment. She later joined Woollim Entertainment in July 2014, making her training period about 5 months.
