Lauren Jauregui (born June 27, 1996) is an American singer, better known as a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony. Jauregui has been featured on songs by Marian Hill[1] and Halsey.[2]

Early life

Jauregui was born and raised in Miami, Florida to Michael Jauregui and Clara Morgado, who are both Cubans.[3][4][5] Her father is a plant manager, and her mother is a teacher, who moved to America from Cuba when Fidel Castro came to power.[6][5] She also has two younger siblings, her younger brother, Chris, and her younger sister, Taylor.

Inspired at an early age by music, her influences include Journey, Paramore, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, and Lana Del Rey.[5][7] She attended Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls school in Miami. While in attendance, Lauren participated in extracurricular activities such as the school’s softball team and talent show.[8][9] At the age of 16, Jauregui auditioned for The X Factor US.[10]

Career

Jauregui auditioned for the second season of The X Factor US in 2012 in Greensboro, North Carolina with the song "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys. Her performance was described at “perfect” by Antonio Reid, who considered Jauregui had a "husky, round, mature" voice at age 16.[11] On the second round of bootcamp, she was put up against country group Sister C with the song "These Arms of Mine". After failing to make it to the live shows as solo artist, Jauregui was brought into a group alongside Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Camila Cabello, who were put together and formed as a group by Simon Cowell and his co-judge Demi Lovato. The group, named Fifth Harmony, went on to come third in the competition.

Fifth Harmony released their debut album Reflection in January 2015 and follow up album 7/27 in May 2016. Their first album generated singles "BO$$" and "Sledgehammer" before "Worth It", featuring Kid Ink, peaked at number twelve in the United States and number three in the United Kingdom. From their sophomore album, "Work from Home" featuring Ty Dolla $ign, became their most successful song to date – peaking at number 4 in the US and number 2 in the UK, while "All in My Head (Flex)" and "That’s My Girl" didn't replicate the same success. The group also contributed music to the soundtrack of the animated film Hotel Transylvania 2 with their song "I'm in Love with a Monster".

After "Work From Home", Jauregui continued with Fifth Harmony as well as her solo endeavors, as individual members started to launch solo projects outside the group. In December 2016, she was featured on a single titled "Back to Me" with Marian Hill.[12] Jauregui was voted by the public as "Celebrity of the Year" at the 2017 British LGBT Awards.[13] She was later featured Halsey's album hopeless fountain kingdom on the track "Strangers".[14] A Billboard writer noted it as "a long-overdue bisexual milestone in mainstream music."[15] The singer specifically chose Jauregui for the track, instead of working with a straight artist: "I just love that Lauren (Jauregui) and I are just two women who have a mainstream pop presence doing a love song for the LGBTQ community."[16]

Activism

Politically outspoken and actively involved in protests,[17] Jauregui has written a couple of open letters since the 2016 Presidential Election, condemning Donald Trump and his policies, including the "muslim ban", calling it "disrespectful to humanity."[4][18] She penned an open letter to voters of Trump, which was published by Billboard on November 18, 2016 stating she is bisexual and calling out Trump voters, "your actions have led to the single-handed destruction of all the progress we’ve made socially as a nation."[4][19]
