Larry Krasner is a Democratic candidate for District Attorney of Philadelphia (DA).

Krasner has worked as a public defender in Philadelphia for 30 years,[1] specializing in civil rights[2] and frequently represented protestors pro bono.[1] His representation for members of movements like Black Lives Matter and Occupy Philadelphia led many to call him an "anti-establishment" candidate.[3][4][5]

Krasner won a crowded primary on May 16, 2017, gaining 38 percent of Democratic ballots cast, about 58,000 votes.[6][7] City officials reported that voter turnout in this race spiked nearly 50 percent, compared to the last contested race for district attorney of Philadelphia, in 2009.[8] There is no incumbent DA in Philadelphia. In the November general election, Krasner will face Beth Grossman, a former assistant district attorney and the only Republican candidate.[3] Philadelphia is a 7-1 Democratic constituency and the winner of the primary is the presumptive victor in the general.[5]

The incumbent DA, R. Seth Williams, is currently awaiting trial on federal corruption charges.[6]

Krasner was a featured speaker at the 2017 People's Summit[9]

Early life and education

Krasner was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1961 in St. Louis.[10] His father, the son of Russian Jewish immigrants, wrote crime fiction, and his mother was an evangelical Christian pastor.[11] His family eventually moved to the Philadelphia area while he was still in school.[10]

Krasner attended the University of Chicago and Stanford Law School, graduating in 1987.[10] After graduation he moved back to Philadelphia to work for the Federal Public Defender’s Office.[10]
