Birtinya is a suburb of the Sunshine Coast Region, Queensland, Australia.[2] It is located within the Kawana Waters urban centre. It contains the locality of Kawana Forest. In the 2011 census, Birtinya had a population of 314 people.[1]
History
The name Birtinya is reportedly an Aboriginal word meaning neighbouring proposed by the development company, Alfred Grant Pty Ltd, on 31 March 1960.[2]
Amenities
Birtinya is built around Lake Kawana, which includes a 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) buoyed course for flat water competitions.[3]
The Lake Kawana Community Centre located beside the lake on Sportsmans Drive (26°44′25″S 153°07′30″E / 26.74024°S 153.12492°E) provides 15 spaces (halls and meeting rooms) together with commercial kitchen facilities and smaller kitchenettes for community events. It is operated by the Sunshine Coast Regional council.[4] The centre was officially opened on 5 November 2005 by City of Caloundra mayor Don Aldous.[5]
