Koffee with Karan is a talk show on STAR World India and STAR Plus, hosted by film producer and director Karan Johar. The show is aired on STAR World India in India and on STAR Plus worldwide. The fifth season started airing on 6 November 2016.[1]

Overview

The show airs on STAR World India. It is also telecast on other channels of the same network like Star Plus and Star One. The show is noted for its fresh and witty appeal. It is known for the revelations made by celebrities and their take on their contemporaries. The show also has its share of controversies and hence brings in great TRPs.

The show began to air in 2004 and was a huge success. The first episode aired on 20 November 2004 and the first season ended on 28 May 2005. The show had been put on hold due to Johar's commitment to his next directorial project, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006).

After 3 years and various re-runs on Star World, Koffee with Karan returned on 7 November 2010 for season 3.[2] The third season ended on 17 April 2011.

The show was back at the end of 2013 for a fourth season premiering on 1 December 2013. The fourth season ended on 13 April 2014.[3]

The fifth season of the show premiered on 6 November 2016 with Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt.

Regular segments

Rapid Fire
The segment involves Johar asking a volley of questions to the guest, in which they have to answer as quickly as possible. The questions usually involve making choices between two options or just giving a straight answer. Johar usually forces the guest to choose one option of those he presents. The winner wins his Koffee Hamper. The Koffee Hamper is filled with electronic gadgets and some edible items from across the globe specially chocolates and coffees.
Opinions
Sometimes the show features a segment which allows the guest to hear other people's opinions. They may come from the general public or people within the industry. In some episodes it will be presented in the end of the show and in some during the show. Some episodes don't have an Opinion section; from Season 4 onwards, this segment has seldom been featured.
Koffee Quiz (introduced in Season 4)
Johar asks a mix of bollywood-based and general knowledge questions to his guests. The guests are given a buzzer each to press for the chance to answer. The first one to press the buzzer gets to answer, it is passed on to the other guest only if the answer is wrong; the buzzers were discontinued after the first episode of Season 5. The guest with the highest points is the winner of the segment and wins a prize. A gift, usually one wrapped in a cover is given to the winner of the Quiz.

Controversy

Kangana Ranaut and Karan Johar had a small clash over Karan making fun of Kangana's English on the same show and also stating that he never expected that Kangana would give such phenomenal and National Award winning performances. He also apologised to her for making such comments in the past. In the rapid-fire round, Kangana made a bold comment stating that Karan would play the antagonist in Kangana's biopic or autobiography ever made or written. When asked 'Who has given you more attitude in the industry, men or women?', Kangana answered "Karan Johar" and said, "In my biopic, if ever it is made, you (Karan Johar) would play that stereotypical Bollywood biggie who is snooty and completely intolerant towards outsiders, flag bearer of nepotism, 'The Movie Mafia'". On the other hand, Karan took the comments very lightly and said he would love to be the antagonist if it made the book a big success. Karan also made several apologies to Kangana for judging her in the past. After the episode aired the social media was ablaze. Kangana and Karan were being asked for the opinions on the comments on all social media platforms.

Koffee Awards (Season 5)

The latest episode of Karan Johar Season 5 brought back the Koffee Awards, which featured the most memorable moments and episodes from Season 5 competing in different categories. The winners were chosen by a panel consisting of actress and beauty queen Neha Dhupia, comedy group AIB's Rohan Joshi, actress and dancer Malaika Arora and director Ayan Mukherjee. This year's awards didn't have the category for 'Best Rapid-Fire'. The winners of the Koffee Awards were announced on the episode and the trophies were sent to the winners. The winners of the Koffee Awards have also given acceptance speeches. The episode aired on 12 March 2017 on STAR World.

Controversy

The third episode of Season 3, featuring guests Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor, generated media buzz after statements were made by the two. Host Karan Johar asked them to speak about Ranbir Kapoor with whom they both share an equation. Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor had dated for about 2 years and broke up prior to her appearance on the talk show. When discussing the break-up, Padukone hinted that he was not a good boyfriend by saying “I think he needs to work on his boyfriend skills.” She also alluded to Kapoor cheating on her. Sonam Kapoor, who co-starred with Ranbir in their debut film Saawariya, commented that he needed a stylist and was not sexy. After the episode aired, it was reported that Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh had taken issue with the comments made by the actresses. Johar also came under fire for instigating the personal attacks.[11]
