Kim Jae-duck (born on August 7 1979) is a South Korean singer, rapper, and choreographer.[1][2] He is known as a member of Sechs Kies, which was a rival band to the top boy group in the 90's, H.O.T. and reunited in 2016. When Sechs Kies disbanded in 2000, he started a new band, J-Walk with Jang Suwon, also from Sechs Kies. Kim is known for his Busan accent and his nickname is "Ducky" as a reference to his name.

Career

Sechs Kies

He and Lee Jai-jin formed a dance crew called ‘‘Quicksilver’’ in their hometown of Busan and had submitted an audition tape to Daesung Entertainment.[3] It was revealed later that Kang Sunghun, who had watched the audition tape, chose Jae-duck as a member for his excellent dance moves.[4]

Jae-duck was the main dancer in SechsKies and only took a little part in song because of his Busan accent. Along with Lee Jai-jin, they both created the choreography for most of the songs. Sechs Kies achieved great success and became an icon of the 1990s Korean idol groups. However, Sechs Kies suddenly disbanded in 2000 after finishing their fourth album promotion.[5]

J-Walk

After the era of SechsKies ended in 2000 when the members announced they wanted to split ways, Kim was set to become a dance instructor for Sechs Kies label Daesung Entertainment but he ended up joining with his former Sechs Kies member Jang Su-won to form a new duo J-Walk in 2002 under a new label, Kiss Entertainment.[6]

They released their first album, entitled Suddenly on March 2002, and the title track, Suddenly, became a huge hit. They released second album Someday at the same year. Both two albums were well received and acclaimed and they took SBS Gayo Daejeon Popularity Award with former Sechs Kies member Kang Sung-hun in 2002.[7][8] In 2004, they formed a project band, JnC, with Click-B members under Kiss Entertainment and released one album.[9]

Their first EP Sun Shower(여우비) was delayed until 2007 when they signed with Vitamin Entertainment.[6] J-Walk released their third album My Love in 2008 and Eun Ji-won helped them by participating in the music video and featuring in the title song. Since Kim Jae-duck entered the military shortly after, Su-won had to promote the album by himself.

Kim Jae-duck currently resides with former H.O.T. member Tony An after they met during their mandatory military service,[10] which shocked Lee Jai-jin, who forever believed in "defeat H.O.T. (타도 H.O.T)". Jae-duck has became the director of Tony's company TN Nation Entertainment in 2014.[8] Moreover, he did many TV shows with Tony An, and showed much affection towards him.[11]

After Su-won was discharged from army, J-Walk has signed under A&G Modes and released some digital songs.[12] They returned with mini album "Love...Painfully" with main track "Strive" on December 2013.[13]

2016: Reunite as SechsKies

In 2016, SechsKies finally reunited after disbanding 16 years ago, in 2000 in a famous Korean variety TV show called "Infinite Challenge." Ko Ji Yong, who, after disbanding from Sechs Kies, left the entertainment business permanently and pursued a new career, surprised the members of SechsKies as well as all the fans by appearing in the reunion concert.[14] After Infinite Challenge aired, SechsKies earned many more fans; their hit songs ranked high in music charts and “Couple” was seen in 11th place in Music Bank.[15]

With their growing popularity, the five SechsKies members signed a contract with the YG entertainment, and chose to debut as an idol group again.[16] They actively participated in many other TV shows, such as Radio Star, You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook, and Fantastic Duo.[17][18] The SechsKies reunion concert in September 2016 was a huge hit.[19] On October 7, Sechs Kies released a new digital single "Three Words (세 단어)" which topped all 8 Korean major music charts shortly after releases. It also ranked high in Asian music charts and iTunes charts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and others.[20]

Kim Jae-duck surprised many viewers and fans with his amazing dancing skills and rap that he had managed to preserve for more than 20 years. He received more invitation after reunion and joined different activities.[21]

On July 1, DongA TV's announced new restaurant touring show 'Delicious Man' starring Jae-duck and Tony Ahn.[22]

On November 23, YG announced that SechsKies' new album will be released on December 1, 2016. The new album "2016 Re-ALBUM" contains 10 past hit songs of SechsKies that were rearranged and remastered by YG producers, and is prepared a special gift for fans.[23]

SechsKies continued the Yellow Note concert tour on December 10 in Daegu and on December 24–25 in Busan. On October 31, all SechsKies tour concert seats for December were sold out within a few minutes.

On December 16, YG announced SechsKies is to hold a "Yellow Note Final in Seoul" concert on January 21 and 22 at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium.[24] On December 22, all 13,000 tickets were sold out within three minutes.

At the end of the year, SechsKies won several awards including Click! Star Wars Awards Hall of Fame, the 6th Gaon Chart Music Awards The Kpop Contribution of The Year, the 8th Melon Music Awards Hall of Fame, the 31st Golden Disc Awards Best Male Group Performance and the 26th Seoul Music Awards Bonsang.
