Kim Chung-ha (born Kim Chan-mi on February 9, 1996), better known by the mononym Chungha, is a South Korean singer. She is best known for finishing fourth in Mnet's girl group survival show Produce 101 and as a former member of the now disbanded South Korean girl group I.O.I.[1]

Early life

Kim Chung-ha was born Kim Chan-mi on February 9, 1996 in South Korea. She lived in Dallas, Texas for eight years before returning to South Korea to become a singer. As a result, she is able to speak both English and Korean.[2] She auditioned for YG Entertainment and was a former JYP Entertainment trainee[3] before joining M&H Entertainment in 2016[4]. She had trained for three years before debuting, and had been dancing for 6–7 years. She revealed on Hit The Stage that she almost quit dancing due to financial issues but she asked her family to allow her to continue as she was confident in it.[5]

Career

2016: Produce 101 and I.O.I

In January, Kim Chung-ha represented M&H Entertainment on reality girl group survival show Produce 101. She finished in fourth place[6] with 403,633 votes and debuted on May 4, with the project girl group I.O.I with the mini-album Chrysalis.[7]

On June 10, YMC Entertainment revealed Kim Chung-ha as one of the seven members of I.O.I's unit group, slated to promote the group's second single, Whatta Man during the summer of 2016.[8] It was revealed that three teams were contacted to make the choreography for Whatta Man, but Chung-ha's was chosen because it was deemed to be the highest quality.[9] The single album was a commercial success peaking at number 2 on the Gaon Digital Chart and on the Gaon Album Chart, for its digital (downloads and streaming) and physical sales respectively.

On June 30, it was revealed that Kim Chung-ha would be having a cameo appearance on Korean drama, Entourage along with fellow I.O.I member Lim Na-young.[10]

On July 24, Kim Chung-ha was revealed to be a new cast member on dance survival show, Hit The Stage.[11] She appeared in the This Love themed episodes and finished in seventh place. She also appeared in the finals, finishing in sixth place overall.

On August 17, it was announced that Kim Chung-ha would be collaborating with I.O.I band mates Choi Yoo-jung, Jeon So-mi, and DIA's Ki Hui-hyeon for the digital single, "Flower, Wind and You" produced by Boi B.[12]

On 21 December, M&H Entertainment confirmed that Kim Chung-ha will be debuting as a solo artist in the beginning of 2017 after wrapping up I.O.I's promotions.[13]

On 23 December, Kim Chung-ha collaborated with Heo Jung-eun and HALO's Ooon for the holiday carol "Snow In This Year" that was featured on the Korean drama, My Fair Lady.[14]

2017–present: Solo debut with "Hands on Me"

On January 10, it was announced that Chung-ha was selected to be a host for EBS' Ah! Sunday - A Running Miracle. She will be showing the public how to improve their physical fitness via jogging,[15] and will be taking a team of challengers under her wing for the show.

Months after the disbandment of I.O.I, the singer's company revealed Chung-ha would be releasing an album within the year.

On April 21, Chung-ha released her pre-debut single titled "Week", on the official M&H Entertainment YouTube account.[16]

On June 7, Chung-ha released her debut EP, entitled Hands on Me, with the lead track "Why Don’t You Know".[17][18]

On July 17, it was revealed that Chung-ha would feature in Samuel Kim's solo debut album entitled Sixteen, with the track "With U".[19]
