The Kawasaki Heavy Industries & CRRC Qingdao Sifang C151C[2] is the sixth generation of rolling stock to be introduced on the existing East West Line and North South Line of Singapore. 12 trains were purchased and they will be delivered between 2018 and 2019.

Tender

The tender for trains under the contract 151C was closed on 14 May 2015 with 3 bids. The Land Transport Authority has shortlisted all of them and the tender results was published on 22 Sep 2015.[3][4]

New features

The C151C will be the first MRT rolling stock on the NSEWL to be fitted with fold-up seats, and a newer Dynamic Route Map Display also found in CT251 on the Thomson-East Coast Line.[5]

There is also a leaked image of a supposed train for the NSEWL, tagged as C151C, showing the livery of the train following LTA's rule and regulation. The livery is shown to be without SMRT's unique pixel livery, but painted in black for the upper body and white for the lower body, separated by a red and green stripe, depicting the NSEWL colours. The source of the image is unknown, but given the interior looking a lot similar to the current C151A and C151B trains, and with the SMRT logo on it, chances are likely.

The car numbers of the trains range from x701 to x724, where x depends on the carriage type. Individual cars are assigned a 4 digit serial number. A complete six-car trainset consists of an identical twin set of one driving trailer(DT) and two motor cars(M1 & M2) permanently coupled together. For example, set 705/706 consists of carriages 3705, 1705, 2705, 2706, 1706 and 3706.

Doubts about the consortium

When the defects from the relatively new C151A trains constructed by same consortium made public on 5 July 2016, the discussion of this incident has turned into a political issue in Singapore after Gerald Giam from the Workers Party had made a Facebook post[6] about why the same consortium are awarded the subsequent contracts (Specifically both C151C and CT251 trains were awarded to the same consortium again in 2015, while the C151B was also awarded to the same consortium in 2012 instead) after the Land Transport Authority and SMRT officially knew the C151A crack defects as early as 2013.[7][8]

The C151A trains that have surfaced issues, along with newer C151B and C151C trains are to be deployed in the East West Line and North South Line while the CT251 trains are to be deployed in Thomson-East Coast Line.
