Karan Oberoi[1] is an Indian television actor, anchor and singer, who acts in Hindi TV serials and TV commercials,[2] and the TV series Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin (2003–06). He is a part of the Indipop boy band, A Band of Boys, formed in 2001, along with Sudhanshu Pandey, Sherrin Varghese, Siddharth Haldipur and Chaitnya Bhosale. The band released a film, Kis Kis Ko in 2004.[3][4][5]

Early life

Karan Oberoi was born in Amritsar, India, the son of Mrs. Rupinder Oberoi and Mr. Brig B J S Oberoi, army personnel. Karan developed a keen interest towards music at very young age, taking his father’s love for various musical instruments and mother’s fondness for singing. He did his schooling along with his three siblings from various army and public schools in India and received a degree in nautical science. Karan was trained as a musician, and he mastered varied range of instruments like guitar, tabla, harmonium and drums. He was profoundly inspired by ‘Ghazal King’, Mr. Jagjit Singh’s music.

He started his journey in the media industry as a model and his acting career kick started with a drama series called Swabhimaan while his connection with music continued through jingles and his composition of background music for a few serials. Karan then started India’s first all-male band that eventually was famed as Band of Boys.

Career

Modelling and acting

Karan received considerable commercial exposure and was face of many successful Ad campaigns from soaps to shoes to cooking oil. His popularity as a model got him a lot of offers from TV producers. He was cast in the series written by the acclaimed author Shobha De and directed by Mahesh Bhatt, Swabhimaan. Soon he was under spotlight with his second show called Saaya on Sony TV that made him one of the popular actors on TV.

Later in Year 2000, He Played male lead character of 'Rajeev"in Doordarshan's Popular Soap Dishayen , opposite to 'Purbi Joshi' and Pooja Ghai. His bandmate Sudhanshu pandey also played role of Sameer aka BABA in this serial.

He also played the lead character in the trailblazing series called Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin as Jassi’s love interest.

Music career

Karan been a trained musician plays around 20 instruments and continues his education learning Hindustani classical vocals till date. He ventured into solo stage performances and his interactive performances coupled with a unique on-stage storytelling aspect are a big favourite with the audiences.

He came up with the idea of starting India’s first boy band and a countrywide band hunt of unprecedented magnitude was launched famously known as A Band of Boys with panel of eminent judges including the likes of Hari Haran and Lesle Lewis.

The band was unveiled in 2002 with their first single, "Meri Neend Ud Gai Hai", released under the music label, Music Curry. The song was an unprecedented hit, smashed all records and went platinum in record time.

Their next song, "Tu he Mera Pyaar Gori", went out to become an even bigger hit and the band was in limelight. Various albums like Nain Katari, Aa Bhi Jaa etc. released by Universal Worldwide and T Series made them a household name. The band continued their journey on various stages around the world with their live wire on-stage performances during almost 800 shows across the globe. The band did a movie titled Kis Kis Ko in 2004.

In 2007, the band released its second album in collaboration with another band named Nexus; they called themselves Xenabob. It not only hit the chart busters but was also a hit all across FM channels. In 2014, A Band of Boys made homecoming with their satirical song for the Ungli Campaign – urging people to vote for the general elections.

In 2015, Karan released his single "Challa" on the digital platform through Eros Now.

2016: New music and upcoming projects

Presently he is gearing up for his Hindi Album, producing content, is a creative consultant to a few companies, is creating new IP’s as an entrepreneur, setting up his film production house and writing films.

He first started acting through the TV serial, Swabhimaan an afternoon soap opera aired in 1995, directed by Mahesh Bhatt, followed by Saaya in 1998. He also played the role of Rajive in Dishayen.

After many years, he appeared on Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and then the musical show, 'Antakshari'.

Star Plus rang in the new year with Hai Na Bolo Bolo with Oberoi anchoring. He is a member of A Band of Boys, which was formed in 2001, after auditions which had 1200 entries, judged by Hariharan, Lesle Lewis, Vinod Nair and Manu Kumaaran. The band made their debut with album Kabhi yeh kabhi woh featuring the number Meri neend.[2][6] The band did a movie titled Kis Kis Ko in 2004.

Oberoi appeared in Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin. He was also in serials such as Zindagi Badal Sakta Hai Hadsaa in which he played the role of Inspector Abhimanyu Singh/Abhi. He is the anchor of Antakhshari in zee tv.

He was in a brief relationship with TV actress Mona Singh, after they met in 2006.[7][8]
