The Kamikōchi Line (上高地線, Kamikōchi-sen) is a railway line operated by the Japanese private railway operator Alpico Kōtsū in the western suburbs of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture. The line connects Matsumoto with Shinshimashima, the transportation gateway to Kamikōchi and the Hida Mountains.^[1]

History

The line opened to Shimashima (1.3 km beyond Shin-Shimashima) between 1921 and 1922, electrified at 600 VDC. This was increased to 750 VDC in 1957. Freight services ceased in 1973.

In 1983 landslides caused by Typhoon Forrest resulted in the closure of the line beyond Shinshimashima, and the line voltage was increased to 1500 VDC in 1986.
