KVPW 106.3 FM is a radio station that broadcasts the Air1 Contemporary Christian music format.[2] KVPW serves the U.S. state of California's San Joaquin Valley, and is licensed to Kingsburg, California.
History
KSXE began airing a Rhythmic Contemporary format on August 3, 2006. But prior to its debut it stunted with a "Porn Radio" format, which made headlines in the music trades. It described its format "Rhythmic for Adults", but because of the large Hispanic population, they also played some freestyle (hip-hop, urban dance and rock en español) with Latin rhythmic cuts.
When the station first began airing a Rhythmic Contemporary format, it was known as KFYE up until it March 30, 2007, when after a week of speculation it changed its calls to KSXE, which they did so it can match its on-air moniker. During the Summer of 2007 KSXE began shifting away from Rhythmic AC to a Top 40/CHR direction with a Rhythmic lean, and by September 2007 completed the transition. On Tuesday, October 30, 2007, "Sexy 106.3" became known as "Power 106".
This coincides with the purchase by MackNificent Broadcasting Inc. On July 14, 2008 KVPW shifted directions to Rhythmic Top 40, putting it in direct competition with Rhythmic rivals KBOS-FM and KSEQ.
On October 3, 2008 MackNificent sold KVPW back to ProActive, resulting in the entire airstaff exiting the station and leaving it without DJs for the time being. The station then called itself "My 106.3 fm".
After the sale, MackNificent and ProActive have been at odds. "We had to repossess the station because they did not pay their bills," says Ed Monson, market coordinator. But Greg Mack of MackNificent Broadcasting says that is an absolute lie. "I always pay my bills. I allowed Jerry [Clifton] to take the station back to work his way out of his own problems (referring to the abrupt sign-offs of Spokane, Washington radio outlets KQQB-FM and KAZZ in June 2008 after its former owners went to court and got an order to take back the stations after ProActive failed to complete its payment).[3] " This move came about after a LMA that was made between the two companies fell through.
It also had transmitter issues with Educational Media Foundation that resulted in the station being silenced, but returned after citing a "misunderstanding" between the two parties. ProActive made an arrangement deal with EMF to sell the station if ProActive defaulted on the payments. The station had been evicted from the tower it leased from Educational Media Foundation, since June 16, 2009, after the company also filed to take over the license of KVPW back in February. EMF claimed that Pro-Active defaulted on its agreement to pay off its promissory note or find a buyer to take that note over. Pro-Active, whose principal is consultant Jerry Clifton, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2008. KVPW's license was transferred to Educational Media Foundation on June 30, 2010 and has since aired the Air 1 Contemporary Christian music format.[4]
