Juuka (Swedish: Juga) is a municipality of Finland.

It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 5,022 (31 March 2016)[2] and covers an area of 1,501.70 square kilometres (579.81 sq mi) of which 344.78 km2 (133.12 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 3.34 inhabitants per square kilometre (8.7/sq mi).

Neighbouring municipalities are Kuopio, Kaavi, Kontiolahti, Lieksa, Nurmes, Polvijärvi and Rautavaara.

The municipality is unilingually Finnish.

Etymology

Literally juuka means that kind of lake where is a river that flows through a lake.[6]

Nature

River Vaikkojoki (more than 60 km) goes from Lake Vaikkojärvi to Lake Rikkavesi, which is in Kaavi.
