Justin Haynes
Justin Haynes is a Canadian mult-instrumentalist (notably guitar), composer and artist based in Toronto.[1]
Career
"Haynes studied with Gary Peacock in N.Y.C. and Ralph Towner in Seattle."[2] AllMusic states that he "...began appearing in a number of varied collaborations during the '90s", "most often ... with Tena Palmer (of the group Chelsea Bridge) and with trumpeter Kevin Turcotte."[3]
In a November 1999 review, Jazz Times stated that in a "world of stretched-out solos and 10-minute cuts, Canadian guitarist/pianist/banjoist Justin Haynes keeps his original selections as short as their one- and two-word titles on this whimsical and atmospheric album." The review states that "there is a lushness on Haynes' tropical "Show"...[and] Cowboy rhythms make an amusing setting for "Lope Some."[4]
Music critic Peter Hum states "[w]ho’s the most accomplished improviser who left Ottawa for somewhere else to thrive? A very reasonable candidate might well be Toronto guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Justin Haynes". [5] Raul de Gama calls Haynes a "...canny electro-technician who adds synth, prepared piano, cassette player, and tin cans into this delightfully weird modern mistura fina. Haynes' myriad electronic instruments and a lonely electric guitar which blends gleaming sonorities with soaring gestures and dramatically free and volatile improvisation.[6]
His more recent work has been as a guitarist, pianist, recordist, composer and as a collaborator with interdisciplinary artists.
