Judhajit Bagchi, also known as Jeet (born 26 October 1981) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, editor and producer. Bagchi works with Ranadeep Bhattacharyya and together, they directed and produced the film Amen (2010).[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] In both 2015 and 2016, Bagchi won an International Business Award (Stevie Award)[13] and a Cannes Corporate media and TV award.[14] He was the first Indian film maker to win these awards and the only Indian film maker to win them in consecutive years.[15][16][17][18][19][20]

Early life and education

Bagchi was born in Serampore, West Bengal, India in 1981. He received his undergraduate degree in Economics from Presidency College, Calcutta with honours. Bagchi received his post graduate in Management Studies and Communication from Manipal Institute of Communication. In 2005, Bagchi submitted his post-graduate dissertation titled Inclusive National Identity in Bollywood films: A Case Study of Swades. It was later published as a section in the book, Media in a Globalised World.[21]

After completing his studies, Bagchi was employed by Genesis Films, Mumbai. He was an apprentice for two years under Prahlad Kakkar in advertising.[15][22]

Career

After finishing his apprenticeship, Bagchi started writing and conceptualising television commercials for advertising agencies and independent production houses. In 2010, he opened his film production house, Yaanus Films with Ranadeep Bhattacharyya. In 2011, their first short film, Amen (2010) won the Best Indian Narrative Short award at the Mumbai Queer Film Festival, Mumbai.[22][23][24]

Bagchi also freelances as an independent director. In that role, he has made advertising films and brand films for Passion Film.[25] In 2015, Bagchi won the Silver Dolphin award at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards for the corporate image film for Shakti Bhog Foods Ltd.[26] In 2016, he won his second Dolphin at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards for the marketing film made for the Bareilly-based oil company B.L. Agro Oils.[27][16][17][18][19] Both the films have also won the Gold Stevie Award at the International Business Awards (Stevie Awards).[22][28][29]

Photography

Bagchi is a published photographer. He has had his work published in Heritage India magazine and Maharashtra Unlimited magazine.[30]

In 2017, Bagchi and Bhattacharyya placed third at the Prix de la Photographie, Paris (PX3) with their portrait photo titled Thriver featuring the equal rights activist Harish Iyer.[31] They also received honourable mentions for three other photographs, Pheromones in the Self Promotion Advertising (Fashion) category[32]; Gods on Duty in the Portrait Children category featuring Bahurupi beggars at the Jagannath Ratha Yatra festival of Puri [33]; and, Love that dare not speak its name in the Fine Art Nude category.[34].
