The Obie award–winning score for Juan Darién: A Carnival Mass was first composed by Elliot Goldenthal circa 1988 when the musical first opened off-Broadway in a small former church and was subsequently reworked and refined for the on-Broadway release of the show in 1996.[2]

History

Goldenthal collaborated closely with the musical's director, and his personal partner, Julie Taymor to create a score that would complement the off-beat show; the score displays the composer's ability to blend musical styles with a carnival version of a Requiem Mass sung in Latin and Spanish, a blend of primal jungle calls and liturgical song with sharp-edged jazz and hints of minimalism. It was well received by critics.

Elliot Goldenthal had a small part in the actual show as a 'Circus Barker / Streetsinger'.[3]
