Jordan Charles Vogt-Roberts (born September 22, 1984) is an American film and television director and screenwriter. His feature directorial debut, The Kings of Summer, screened at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, and also at the 2013 Cleveland International Film Festival. The film won the Narrative Feature Audience Award at the 2013 Dallas International Film Festival.[1] He also wrote and directed a short film which screened at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW, Successful Alcoholics. He also co-wrote and directed the TV series Mash Up. In 2017, Vogt-Roberts directed the MonsterVerse film Kong: Skull Island.

Work

Vogt-Roberts started his career producing and directing episodes of two web series, Memoirs of a Manchild (2009-2010) and Book Club (2009-2013), and directing nearly all the episodes of the web series Single Dads (2009-2011).[2]

After turning an episode of Memoirs of Manchild into the short film Mint in a Box (2009),[3] in 2010, he wrote and directed the short film Successful Alcoholics, starring T.J. Miller and Lizzy Caplan. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the SXSW Film Festival, the AFI Fest and 30 other film festivals.[4]

Vogt-Roberts would later work with Miller again on Comedy Central's Mash Up. He co-wrote the series with Miller and directed all of its episodes.[5] He has directed various episodes of Funny or Die Presents as well as several episodes of MTV's Death Valley.

Vogt-Roberts's feature film debut, The Kings of Summer, was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and the Cleveland International Film Festival, and won the Narrative Feature Audience Award at the 2013 Dallas International Film Festival.

In September 2014, it was announced that Vogt-Roberts would direct Kong: Skull Island. The film was released on March 10, 2017.[6]

Vogt-Roberts is directing a film based on the Metal Gear series, after reportedly starting talks with Sony Pictures in 2014.[7] Jay Basu has been hired to write the script.[8] In interviews, Vogt-Roberts had repeatedly expressed his passion for video games, and for the Metal Gear series in particular, and had previously met with Hideo Kojima to discuss the making of the film.[9] In Kong: Skull Island, a boat bears the name Gray Fox after the character of the same name in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Metal Gear Solid.[10] Vogt-Roberts explained how he invited potential screenplay writers to his house to play several Metal Gear games,[9] and noted the difficulty in keeping the game's tone for the film,[10] as well as acknowledging the generally poor critical reception of previous film adaptations of video games.[9]

In 2017, Vogt-Roberts pitched a Red Son adaptation to Warner Brothers, as an "offshoot" of the DC Extended Universe with different actors for Superman and Batman, but "was told no."[11]

Vogt-Roberts is from Detroit. He contributed to the webpage Blerds.com with a few stand-up comedian friends in order to display various videos merging stand-up and visual storytelling that he produced and directed.[12]
