Jonathan Shepherd

Jonathan P. Shepherd is a Welsh surgeon and professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Cardiff University. He is also Vice Dean of Cardiff University and the founder and director of its Violence Research Group.[1][2] He founded the Violence Research Group in 1991 after noticing that, as a surgeon, he was treating an increasing number of patients with broken jaws and cheekbones as a result of a physical assault.[3]

Research and views

Shepherd's research on reducing violent injuries led to the development of the Cardiff Model for violence prevention. This model has been credited with helping lower violence in Cardiff by 40%, and has also been used in Australia.[4][5] He has also attributed this decline in part to more targeted policing and an increased use of CCTV.[6] He developed the Cardiff Model to reduce violence throughout the United Kingdom along with public health researchers on behalf of the Home Office and Department of Health.[7] He has also helped develop a more accurate way for hospitals to keep track of the number of injuries incurred by pub and club patrons,[8] and has published research on the link between low alcohol prices and street violence.[9] He has argued in favor of bars using glasses made of plastic or stronger glass to reduce the risk of injuries.[10]

Honors and awards

Shepherd has been a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences since 2002.[2] He was one of two recipients of the 2008 Stockholm Prize in Criminology.[2] Also in 2008, he was named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his work on behalf of the justice and healthcare systems.[1] Under his direction, the Violence Research Group won the 2009 Queen's Anniversary Prize.[2]
