Jon Kempin (born April 8, 1993) is an American soccer player who currently plays as a goalkeeper for LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer (MLS).
Career
Kempin played in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy for the Sporting Kansas City (SKC) Academy. On August 31, 2010, at the age of 17, Kempin signed his first professional contract,[1] making him Sporting Kansas City's first homegrown player.[2] He dressed for his first professional game on October 23, 2010, as a substitute in the final game of the 2010 season against San Jose. He made his debut on May 29, 2012, in a 3-2 win over Orlando City in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.[3]
Kempin was loaned to Orlando City for the 2013 season.[4] He was loaned to OKC Energy FC for the 2014 season to play under former teammate Jimmy Nielsen.
In August 2014, Kempin won the Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game Most Valuable Player award. On August 10, 2014, he made his MLS debut against Vancouver as a halftime substitute and impressed with a late penalty save.[5] Kempin made his first MLS regular season start on August 16, 2014, against Toronto FC at Sporting Park.
Kempin was loaned to the San Antonio Scorpions for the 2015 season. He was later recalled to back up Tim Melia. He made his first 2015 appearance against former club, Orlando City.[6] In the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, SKC was eliminated in the knockout round by the eventual champions, Portland Timbers. Melia was forced to leave the knockout round match due to injury and was replaced by Kempin.[7] The game eventually went to penalty kicks, where Kempin's attempt in the 11th round was saved and Portland advanced.
In 2016, Kempin played with SKC's USL affiliate, Swope Park Rangers. He signed with LA Galaxy for the 2017 season.[8]
