Sir John Shipley Rowlinson FREng[1] (born 12 May 1926) is a British chemist. Born in Handforth, Cheshire, he attended the independent Rossall School. He was educated at Trinity College, Oxford where he was awarded a Millard scholarship to read Chemistry. His tutor was Professor Sir Cyril Hinshelwood, who was the first head of the Physical Chemistry Laboratory.[2] He received a D. Phil from the University of Oxford in chemical kinetics, working under J. D. Lambert.

In 1961, he was appointed Professor in Chemical Technology at Imperial College London.[2] In 1974, he moved to Oxford as Dr Lee's Professor of Chemistry. He retired in 1993 but remains a Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford. He received the Faraday Lectureship Prize in 1983. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1970.[3] He was appointed a Fellow[4] of the Royal Academy of Engineering[5] in 1976. He was knighted in the 2000 Birthday Honours.
