John Hope College Preparatory High School (known as John Hope or JHCP) is a public 4–year high school located in the Englewood neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1971, Hope is operated by the Chicago Public Schools district. The school is named for educator and religious leader John Hope. Hope shares its campus with Kipp Bloom College Prep School, a neighborhood middle charter school that opened for the 2013–14 school year.
History
The school opened in August 1971 as John Hope Middle School, a neighborhood middle school serving students in grades six through eighth. In September 1996, The Chicago board of education was faced with overcrowding issues at area–high schools near Hope. Hope's student enrollment at the time was approximately 300. Due to overcrowding of nearby high schools, The school board decided revamped the neighborhood attendance boundaries; and to convert Hope into a high school.[4] The school began accepting ninth grade students (freshmen) for the 1997–98 school year; phasing out its middle school program.[5] Due to an enrollment decline, The school re–implemented the middle school program with a seventh and eighth grade program in 2003; the program was later phased out in 2007.
Athletics
Hope competes in the Chicago Public High School League (CPL) and is a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA).[6] The school sport teams are nicknamed Eagles. The boys' basketball team were regional champions five times (2003–04, 2004–05, 2007–08, 2010–11, 2014–15). The girls' basketball team were regional champions eight times (2002–03, 2003–04, 2005–06, 2006–07, 2007–08, 2011–12, 2013–14, 2014–15) and Class AA three times (2002, 2006 and 2007).
