John Frieda is a hair care and styling products brand. It was founded by stylist John Frieda and is now owned by Japanese cosmetics company Kao Corporation.[1]
History
John Frieda worked in several salons before opening his own in London in 1976. In the 1980s he worked on the development of styling products, including a thickening lotion. The lotion was initially sold in Boots on a trial basis.[2]
Frieda appeared on television to give a demonstration of the product. This led to an order for 1.2 million bottles of thickening lotion. It is at this point that Gail Federici joined Frieda to work on the products and John Frieda Professional Hair Care Inc. was incorporated, with each owning half of the business.[3]
In 1990, a John Frieda salon opened in New York and the company started selling Frizz Ease Serum in the US market, where it became the number one styling product in America.[4]
In 2002, Frieda sold the hair care products company to Kao Corporation for $450m.[5] He retained the five John Frieda salons. Today there are four John Frieda salons: two in London and two in New York.[6] The LA salon has permanently closed.[7]
Frizz Ease
Frizz Ease is a John Frieda range of haircare products for people with frizz. The first serum was launched in 1989 and cost £5.99. The products in the Frizz Ease range now include shampoos, conditioners and several serums.[8] They make hair smoother and straighter by using polishing silicones.[9]
The idea for a serum to help control frizz came from John Frieda’s collaborator Gail Federici. Having suffered with frizzy hair, she had the idea to create a serum to fix it.[10] Today, John Frieda’s Frizz Ease line sells one bottle every 30 seconds worldwide.[9]
