Newport News, Va. (October 21, 2005) - Mayor of Newport News, Joe S. Frank, congratulates Capt. Garry R. White and USS George Washington (CVN 73) crew members for their hard work and help with the community of Newport News. More than 600 George Washington Sailors participated in community relations projects throughout the city of Newport News culminating in the record for most volunteer hours for an individual Navy command in one year. Since the ship’s arrival to Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard, the ship has contributed over 21,000 hours of community service to the Hampton Roads area. Joe S. Frank is a former mayor of Newport News, Virginia. He was born November 14, 1942 in Newport News. He is a lawyer by trade and was elected mayor on July 1, 1996. His last term expired June 30, 2010.[1] He was re-elected in May 1998, 2002, and 2006. He is the first directly-elected mayor in the history of the City. Mayor Frank is an Eagle Scout and was recently awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. In homage of this occasion, the Captain's Lounge in the Rappahannock Scout Camp at Bayport Scout Reservation will be named in his honor. Joe also has a handsome grandson named Carson.
