Joseph Edward "Joe" Bryan (born 17 September 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a left-back for Bristol City. He is also capable as a left-sided midfielder and left-sided wing-back. He has also had loan spells with Bath City and Plymouth Argyle. A product of Bristol City's youth academy, consistently excellent performances on the pitch have led to Bryan being hailed as one of the academy's best success stories.

Career

Bryan was born in Bristol. He came through the Bristol City youth team and signed his first professional contract in 2011 on a two-year deal.[3] On 24 November 2011, Bryan joined Conference National side Bath City on loan until January.[4] He scored in a 3–1 win over A.F.C. Telford United. He made his professional debut on 6 March 2012, in a 3–2 win over Leicester City at Ashton Gate.[5] In March 2013, he joined Plymouth Argyle on loan until the end of the season.[6][7] Bryan made his debut the same day against Bradford City and scored his first Football League goal at Chesterfield in April.[8][9] He returned to Bristol City at the end of the season having played on the left side of midfield in ten consecutive games for Argyle.[9] Bryan scored his first goal for City in the Bristol derby with Rovers in September,[10][11] and his first league goal for the club came in November against Crawley Town. In June 2015 he signed a contract extension keeping him at Bristol City until 2019.[12]

Since breaking into the first team at Bristol City, Bryan has become a fan-favourite and has proved himself as capable in a number of positions, including at left-back, left-wing, left-midfield, as well as a spell being played as a central midfielder. His versatility, skill and home-grown nature at Bristol City has led to Bryan becoming viewed as one of the most elite developments to have come from the club's academy.

International career

Bryan was selected by the Scotland national under-21 football team in October 2012,[13] but could not play due to a concussion he received playing for Bristol City against Leeds United.

Bryan's father, Alan, is a renowned cardiac surgeon, being a specialist in aortic surgery. He also has a sister, Lucy Bryan, who competes in pole vaulting, representing Great Britain.[14] He also has a brother, Will, and owns a dog. He lives in Congresbury.
